Cardoso-Cruz H obtained his BSc in Applied Biology at the University of Minho (Braga, Portugal, 2002). After, he moved to Oporto to join the Prof. Vasco Galhardo lab to pursue his post-graduate studies in neurosciences. In 2008, he obtained his MSc degree in Bioinformatics at the Oporto Sciences Faculty under supervision of Prof. A. Rocha (Applied Mathematics) and co-supervision of Prof. V. Galhardo (Oporto Medicine Faculty (FMUP), Experimental Biology). In 2008, he was awarded with a FCT fellowship to carry out his doctoral studies under supervision of Prof. Vasco Galhardo. In 2012, he obtained his PhD degree in Neuroscience at the FMUP. In 2013, he was awarded with a FCT fellowship to carry out his postdoctoral studies at the IBMC/ Morphophysiology of the Somatosensory System Group. Recently, Cardoso-Cruz is a PhD researcher at the i3S/Pain Research Group. His research interest is the relationship between pain and cognitive functions. His research involves an interdisciplinary approach, combining in-vivo electrophysiology techniques, behavior evaluation, optogenetic brain stimulation, development of analytical tools for the study of neuronal dynamics, and design and implementation of algorithms for decoding neuronal data. Since the PhD degree (2012), his research focuses on how chronic pain influence high-level cognitive functions, with special emphasis on working memory (WM) information processing across the prefrontal and hippocampal networks. Thus far, Cardoso-Cruz research findings are very enlightening; specially to understand how brain circuits that typically are involved in cognitive processes can also process nociceptive information. Specifically, as a leading marker of pain-related cognitive dysfunctions, he found a significant reduction of functional connectivity between the prefrontal cortex, hippocampal formation (J Neurosci 2013, 2014; Pain 2016), and mediodorsal thalamus (Pain, 2013) during cognitive motifs processing. In this scope, he described several functional and morphological pain-related alterations in these brain areas that have an important impact in local neural circuits (Pain 2016, Neurosci Lett 2018), and DAergic signaling mediated by DA D2 receptors (J Neurosci 2014; J Exp Neurosci 2016; Eur J Pain 2018). Currently, his studies are focused in mechanisms underlying pain-related prefrontal hypoDAergic tone, and how this imbalance in prefrontal local networks signaling may contribute to an abnormal output to other subcortical structures during cognitive information processing. Cardoso-Cruz recent data showed that selective modulation of prefrontal neurons activity has a pivotal role in the reversion of pain-related functional alterations (Pain 2019), and their output to the hippocampal formation (Sci Rep 2019). He is the PI coordinator of the research project - PTDC/MED-NEU/28181/2017 (total funding: 229.166,70 euros) funded by a competitive call, and member of the research team of another ongoing project. He has also participated as a member in 8 national and 1 EU research projects completed successful. He has published 13 papers so far, 76.9% in Q1 percentile, 8 of them in top 10 journals, and has 350 citations. He has a cumulative impact factor of 63.57 (source SJR), 30.8% of his output have the collaboration of other national or international institutions. He is the author of 11 oral communications, 49 panel communications in national or international research meetings, and also participated in the peer-review of 5 papers. He supervises a postdoc researcher, and a master researcher fellow. He has completed the supervision of 2 MSc students, and is involved in the supervision of 2 ongoing. Cardoso-Cruz work has received several honors/awards, among which stand out the best paper award in “Neurophysiology of Systems and Behavior - 2013” attributed by the SPN Society, and by 3 times the most important national award in Basic Pain Research (2004, 2013, 2015) by Grünenthal Foundation.
