Maria Paula Marques (ORCID ID: 0000-0002-8391-0055, http://www.ci.uc.pt/qfm/) is currently an associate professor (with habilitation in Biosciences) of the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra (Portugal). She is assistant-coordinator of the R&D Group Molecular Physical-Chemistry (http://www.ci.uc.pt/qfm/) and head of the Chemoprevention, -Therapy & -Toxicology laboratory. M.P.M. Marques has authored over 180 scientific papers, 9 book chapters and co-edited 3 books (H-index=33, ca. 4600 citations). She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, belongs to the Clinical Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy for Medical Diagnosis (CLIRSPEC, https://clirspec.org/) as well as to several scientific societies (Portuguese Society of Chemistry, Portuguese Society of Biochemistry, Portuguese Society of Pharmacology, Biophotonics World and International Society for Plant Spectroscopy). In the last 5 years, MPM has been a member of the editorial board of some international scientific journals, namely: Recent Patents on Anti-Cancer Drug Discovery, Molecules, Journal of Molecular Structure, Journal of Raman Spectroscopy, RSC Advances, PeerJ, Letters in Drug Design and Discovery, Asian Journal of Physics, Biomedical Spectroscopy and Imaging, and Frontiers in Plant Science. She is the president of the Group “Neutron and Muon Users in Portugal”, hosted in the Portuguese Society of Physics (NeMPo, https://fisica-materia-condensada.spf.pt/NeMPo). She was the recipient of the ISIS Neutron & Muon Source Impact Award 2019/Public Engagement & Society, and her team´s work has received several highlights from national and international facilities (e.g. and CICECO Science/Univ. Avero, ISIS and Diamond Sources (UK)). During her recent research activity she has applied vibrational spectroscopy methods to the study of biologically relevant systems such as phytochemicals (as potential chemopreventive agents), human bones (subject to burning events), human cells and tissues (drug impact and pathology identification). At present, her research is centred on: (i) design of Pt/Pd-based anticancer agents; (ii) development of novel spectroscopic methods for an early diagnosis of cancer and an accurate identification of surgical margins in malignant tumours, aiming at a translation to the clinics (within the funded R&D Project VIBSonCANCER/Centro-01-0145-FEDER-029956); (iii) characterisation of human burned bones for forensic and archaeological purposes (within the European Project ISIS@MACH - MAterials Characterisation Hub). Vibrational spectroscopy is the main methodology applied, including leading-edge synchrotron-based methods (FTIR and EXAFS) and neutron scattering techniques.
