C Pereira is Biochemist, Master in Cell Biology and received, in 2000, her PhD in Cell Biology from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra (UC), Portugal. Presently, she is Principal Investigator (with tenure) at the Faculty of Medicine from UC (FMUC), and is Principal Investigator (PI) of the research line Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Stress Response and ER-Mitochondria Axis at the Cell Signaling and Metabolism group from the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), which integrates the Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB) at UC, recently renewed the Associated Laboratory status with a top 100% score. The specific aims of her research line are to: 1) clarify the biological basis of neuropsychiatric diseases, namely neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer dementia and mental disorders like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, focusing on the deregulation of cellular stress responses, with a special focus on ER and mitochondria stress, and its metabolic and immune implications; 2) explore novel preventive and therapeutic options, namely the potential of natural resources. For these purposes, both in vitro (cell lines and primary cell cultures) and in vivo experimental models (transgenic mice) and also human biological samples (blood samples and skin-derived fibroblasts) are used due to a long-lasting and fruitful collaboration with the Neurology and Psychiatry Departments from the Coimbra University Hospital (CHUC). Due to participation in several funded projects, either as PI/co-PI or as team member, C Pereira published more than 90 peer-reviewed papers, the majority in international quartile 1 (Q1) journals. In addition, she is inventor of 1 patent and 5 presently under evaluation, demonstrating the relevance of her research in knowledge transfer promotion and economic valorization. The scientific impact of her research is reflected in the H index (39) and high nº of citations (~ 4500) (WoScc). In 2004 C Pereira was awarded with the LOréal For Women in Science Prize (1st edition). Until 2022, she integrated the Evaluation Board of this L'Oréal Portugal/UNESCO/FCT award and was invited to participate in the 2021 edition of "Women in Science " book that brings together portraits of Portuguese female researchers. She supervised several PhD (8 concluded, 2 ongoing) and Master (>20 concluded) students, research fellows, UC 1st cycle and ERASMUS students. She is actively enrolled in Master and PhD programs at UC as lecturer or member of organizing committee, thesis supervision, thesis evaluation board (Evaluator, President or Vogal). In addition, she teaches (1st cycle) since 2008: integrated masters in Medicine and Biomedical Engineering (UC), Physiotherapy course (Coimbra Health Technologies School). She is Editor of scientific journals as well as reviewer for J Neurosci, Cell Death Diff, Free Radic Biol Med, Neurobiol Aging, among many others, and has integrated the evaluation board of funding agencies such as ARS (France) and FCT (Portugal). She was invited speaker and/or co-authored more than 50 oral and 100 poster communications in (inter)national scientific meetings and was also enrolled in the organization of several scientific meetings. She actively participated in several science outreach projects and activities, namely "Ciencia Viva during Summer Holidays" and "Brain Awareness Week", and was invited to participate in events in media and broad end-users (TV, radio, newspapers, social networks). In addition to research and teaching duties, C Pereira is also enrolled in FMUC management as member of the Faculty Assembly and of ORBEA the animal welfare entity, and is presently member of the Board of Directors of CNC-UC, . C Pereira is volunteer at the "Machado de Castro" Museum (Coimbra, Portugal) in the project "EU no MusEU" (collaboration with the Alzheimer Portugal Association).
