Mónica S.F. Santos (MSS) graduated in Chemical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP)
in 2008 and concluded her PhD in Environmental Engineering in December 20th, 2013 also in FEUP. Her thesis entitled Chemical
Safety of Drinking Water Networks was part of the EU project SecurEau (7.5 M€) awarded with The Stars of Europe prize. This
project allowed her to establish partnerships with top research institutions, water agencies and companies across Europe.
In 2014, she was integrated in the Environmental Sciences and Technologies group of Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment,
Biotechnology and Energy (LEPABE), where she won a competitive PostDoc grant (2015) from FCT (4.85/5) under the topic Removal
of Highly Risky Cytostatics from Water Courses. Other relevant partnerships were established, such as IDAEA-CSIC (Dr. Silvia
Lacorte), where she did her mobility stay. In 2019, she was hired as Junior Researcher (DL57/2016) to contribute in the study
of environmental mobility and removal processes of cytostatics. In 2020, she took maternity leave and in March 2023 she embraced
a new career as an Assistant Researcher at the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (ISPUP), coordinating
the "Exposure to Cytotoxic Drugs and Health" lab within Epidemiology Research Unit (EPIUnit). MSS published 37 articles in
SCI journals (83% as 1st or last and/or corresponding author), 3 book chapters (as 1st or last author). she was editor of
EMEC18 book of abstracts. M.Santos, A.Alves, L.Madeira Chem. Eng. J. 175 (2011) 279-290 was awarded Top Cited Paper, highlighting
the excellence of the work that has been developed. MSS got financial support in her area of expertise within projects: SHIELD-HMP
(212 k€; Principal Investigator), CytoStraTech (222 k€; Principal Investigator), Healthy Waters (588 k€; Responsible Researcher
for the research topic 1.2 “Risk assessment of cytostatic drugs in coastal and inland waters”), TURTLE (2CABraga; 5 k€; Lead
Researcher at FEUP). In the last five years-work, MSS participated in more 5 projects (3 FCT, 1 regional CCDR-N, 1 UID LEPABE),
plus 1 COST Action (OC-2016-2-21500, in which she was member of the management committee as well), from a total of 13 projects
since her PhD. Currently, she is Principal Investigator of the SHIELD-HMP project, member of the EU-Resolution Biology Network
(COST Action CA24138), and member of the SMARTgNOSTICS project, focusing on global testing and diagnostics solutions for antimicrobial
resistance. To date, MSS has also supervised 2 Postdoc, 2 PhDs granted by FCT, 3 research fellows, 7 Master’s students, and
4 undergraduate students (2 of which were in an industrial setting, enriching their practical application of knowledge). MSS
has also been part of academic juries, serving as the main opponent for 3 MSc theses in Pharmacy, and as a jury member for
1 PhD thesis in Environmental Engineering. Her work has been presented in 33 international conferences and 15 (4 as invited
speaker) national events. MSS was also a member of the organizing committees for 3 national and 3 international events. Regular
reviewer for more than 20 journals and Guest Editor in a 1 Special Issue of Water (MDPI). Moreover, she has taught (theoretical
and practical components) the units of Instrumental Methods of Analysis, Laboratories of Occupational Safety and Hygiene,
Seminars on Occupational Hygiene and Transferable Skills: CiênciaVitae - the scientific curriculum to FEUP's Masters awarded
with EUR-ACE quality label.
