Research work is focused on production and characterization of thin films. Special focus is given to the design and nanostructuring of different architectures of thin films, with special emphasis on using Glancing Angle Deposition to tailor the thin films response by tailoring the main growth features. Major areas of reserach: 1. Application of thin film systems in the development of bio(chemical)/physical sensors, as well as bioelectrodes for biomedical applications - electroencephalography (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) and prostheses; 2. Development of nanostructured hard/protective thin films for metallic/polymeric/ceramic surfaces functionalization and activation; 3. Development of Decorative thin films for protective and decorative applications; 4. Development of thin films with optical activity (Surface Plasmon Resonance and Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance) of the MeOx/MN system (Me = Ti and MN = Ag and Au). Main objectives: Study of the relationship between the deposition parameters and the basic characteristics of the materials (composition, morphology, crystalline/amorphous phases, electronic states, type of connections, etc.). Correlation between these characteristics and the properties of the materials produced (electrical, optical, mechanical and tribological) according to the intended application. FVaz published more than 300 papers (SCOPUS/Web of Science), some with a considerable number of references, with its scientific activity being recognized internationally. Currently, he has an h-index of 44/42 (Scopus/WoS), with nearly 6.700/6.200 citations (Scopus/WoS). Its special concern is the training of young researchers, having successfully supervised more than 40 master's and 15 doctoral theses, more than 50 scientific research fellows and almost 10 post-doctoral fellows.
