Cristina Carvalho is presently a doctorate junior investigator, hired under FCT individual call for scientific employment 2017 (CEECIND/02201/2017). She graduated in Biology from the University of Coimbra (UC) in 2007 and in the same year she was qualified to attend the specialized master program in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the Faculty for Science and Technology of UC (FCTUC), program that she finished in 2008 with a score of 18 in 20 values. She applied to a PhD scholarship from the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT), that she started in the beginning of 2009. From 2009 to 2013 she worked under the supervision of Dr. Paula Moreira at Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology/ Life Sciences Department of FCTUC in the field of neurodegeneration with special focus in T2D-associated complications as risk factors for neurodegenerative events that could compromise brain homeostasis. Her Ph. D. project was performed in collaboration with Prof. David Busija form Tulane University, New Orleans where she performed a scientific internship for almost seven months. Cristina Carvalho obtained her Ph.D. degree in Cellular Biology from the University of Coimbra in 2013. From 2013 to 2016 she had the opportunity to integrate different projects and increase her skills in different areas, trough different project fellowships in the area of Alzheimer's disease and Type 2 diabetes, increasing her knowledge in the field. In 2015/2016 she was awarded a post-doc grant from FCT. Presently, with a junior research contract she is committed to deeply explore the mechanisms underlying type 2 diabetes and its associated complications, in order to achieve knowledge of possible therapeutic targets that could be used as preventive strategies against type 2 diabetes-induced complications. However, a gap in her CV concerning original papers can be observed, which is due to 2 maternity leaves and 2 sick leaves resulting in over 15 months away after her PhD completion. Even so, during the remaining time she was involved in several projects and was responsible for several laboratory tutoring of master students (lab rotations and development of MSc work plans). Besides her individual research project, she participates in ongoing projects such as the project awarded by "Santa Casa da Misericórdia" (Mantero Belard prize), where she is co-author of a recently accepted paper in molecular neurobiology, IF=4.58. Despite the above-mentioned leaves, Cristina has a remarkable CV comprising 9 book chapters and over 50 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, including a publication in Diabetes journal with an IF=8.3, in 2012, a paper in BBA with an IF=5.089 in 2015 and, more recently (2020), a paper in ARS with an IF=5.8. In total she has over 4000 citations and a h-index of 31 (according with google scholar). Organized 1 event, participated in 6 events and has received 2 honors. She also participated as PhD student fellow in 1 project, post-doc (no fellowship) in 2 projects, post-doctoral fellow in 1 project and research fellow in 1 project. More, her international scientific recognition is reflect by frequent requests to review papers submitted to international peer-review journals and more recently, she was also accepted as guest editor in a BBA special issue and was invited to guest editor in two more special issues in Antioxidants and Biomedicines journals that are currently in author´s submission stage. Presently, Cristina has 2 papers under preparation that were delayed due to the confinements resulting from Covid19 pandemic (and resulting homework and care of underaged children, <12years), but will be submitted till the end of present year. In the present year, she won an ESCI EXPLORATORY RESEARCH GRANT to perform a pilot study in animal models of T2D, allowing her to go a step further in the development of her hypothesis.
