Rita Perfeito got a degree in Biology from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2005. In 2006, she received an FCT PhD fellowship to develop her PhD research in the group of Professor Ana Cristina Rego at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), University of Coimbra, Portugal, with the thesis entitled "Interplay between alpha-synuclein and oxidative stress in Parkinson's disease cell models". In 2010 Rita was awarded a Project Research Fellowship to work at the Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Signalling in Neurodegeneration group, CNC, University of Coimbra. In February 2014, Rita Perfeito joined the Vectors and Gene Therapy group, headed by Professor Luís Pereira de Almeida at CNC, University of Coimbra. During this year, Rita worked as a post-doctoral fellow under the projects: "Cell to cell transport of alpha-synuclein in Parkinson's Disease. The progression factor?" and "Aging, stress and chronic diseases: from mechanisms to therapeutics", supported by FCT and QREN "Mais Centro: Programa Operacional Regional do Centro", respectively. In 2015, Rita was granted a Post-Doctoral fellowship by FCT (SFRH/BPD/100130/2014), with the project "Role and mechanisms of alpha-synuclein spreading in Parkinson's disease". This project had great relevance in the field of PD and other neurodegenerative disorders characterized by the presence of aggregate-prone proteins, as it aimed to identify possible common mechanisms of pathology dissemination, using in vitro and in vivo models, therefore giving rise to the development of new therapeutic strategies. In the last year, Rita has enrolled on new, challengeable projects and has been greatly motivated to test new non-invasive therapeutic strategies, focused on the delivery of adeno-associated viral vectors (AAVs) to treat Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) or SCA3. Since February 2019 until the present, Rita Perfeito has been working as a Junior doctorate Investigator and was hired by CIBB under DL57/2016 of the Portuguese law for scientific and technological employment. Rita Perfeito is author/co-author of 11 papers/book chapters in peer-reviewed international journals and several published conference abstracts, which is reflected in an accumulated impact factor of 93.85; 573 citations and an h-index of 9 (source: Google Scholar). In the last five years, Rita has participated as a team member in 10 research projects (eight national and two international consortia), having supervised 2 master theses and collaborated in the supervision of several graduate and undergraduate students. R. Perfeito has also been successful in attracting external funding, as she was granted a year ago the Young Investigator Award from National Ataxia Foundation to develop a project in SCA3. Rita has also been nominated as a member of academic committees and as principal Juri of master theses defences. Rita has been regularly contributing as a lecturer in MSc and PhD programs of the University of Coimbra and in addition to her scientific activity, has been actively participating in science communication initiatives integrated into the CNC outreach programme. As an important component of the dissemination of her research outputs, in the last 5 years, R. Perfeito participated in national and international meetings with several oral/poster presentations as author/co-author. PLEASE BE AWARE that Rita had two career breaks (in 2014 and 2017) due to pregnancies and the respective periods of maternity leave (as mentioned in her professional activities). Furthermore, R. Perfeito has also suspended her lab work for several months in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID19 pandemic, as for the imperative need to give support to her young children of 4 and 7 years old, who stayed without school during the restrictions imposed by the Portuguese Government. All these interruptions seriously impact her scientific productivity.
