Luís Coelho graduated in Physics Engineering in 2006 and obtained a Master’s degree in Instrumentation and Microelectronics in 2007 from the University of Coimbra. During this period, he developed research activities in Atomic and Nuclear Instrumentation, with a particular focus on gaseous scintillation counters for the detection of high-energy radiation. In 2010, he joined the Centre for Applied Photonics at INESC TEC, where he pursued his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Porto, completed in January 2016 with distinction. His doctoral research focused on the application of thin-film technologies to optical fibre sensors. Over the course of his career, he has participated in several national and international research projects. His early work was centred on the study and development of gas detectors for radiation measurements, while his subsequent research has focused on the development of optical fibre probes for the real-time monitoring of environmental systems. This work has involved a broad range of optical sensing technologies, including optical spectroscopy (fluorescence and absorption), evanescent field-based devices, optical gratings, optical interferometers, and plasmonic and photonic crystal-based structures. In parallel, he has developed strong expertise in optical fibre processing. Between 2019 and 2025, he held a Junior Researcher position at INESC TEC under the FCT CEEC programme. During this period, he coordinated two internal seed projects, was responsible for INESC TEC’s participation in a national FCT-funded project, and contributed as a researcher to several other ongoing projects. In 2025, he was awarded an FCT Tenure Research position at INESC TEC in the field of optical sensing. He currently serves as Coordinator of the Centre for Applied Photonics at INESC TEC and is directly responsible for several research and innovation projects. These include one project funded under the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme (INNOAQUA), two projects funded through the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (RRM) of the European Union (Alliance for Energy Transition, WP7 and WP9), and one project funded under the Compete 2030 programme (WaveSense), together representing a total managed funding volume exceeding EUR 1.65 million. In parallel with his research career, he initiated teaching activities in 2021 through a collaboration agreement with the University of Porto. He is currently an Invited Assistant Professor, contributing to teaching activities for undergraduate students in Physics and Physics Engineering. In addition to his academic and scientific activity, he has been actively engaged in innovation and technology transfer, multidisciplinary applied research, and industrial project management. His profile combines expertise in Physics and Electrical and Computer Engineering, with application domains spanning optical sensing, intelligent systems, and innovation-oriented research. His academic service and scientific community engagement include serving as President of the University of Porto SPIE Student Chapter in 2014, membership of the organising committee of the 9th Advanced Study Course on Optical Chemical Sensors and Biosensors (ASCOS 2015), and participation in the organising team of the Optical Fiber Sensors Conference (OFS-29), held in Portugal in 2025. Luís Coelho is the author of more than 170 scientific publications, including papers in international journals and contributions to national and international conferences. According to Scopus(24 March 2026), his scientific output has received more than 3,937 citations, corresponding to an h-index of 28. He has also supervised several Master’s and Ph.D. students, served as a reviewer for a wide range of international scientific publishers and journals, including IEEE, OSA, SPIE, Elsevier, PIER, MDPI, Springer, among others, and currently acts as Guest Editor of special issues and member of editorial boards of recognized international journals.
