Svetlozar Velizarov was born and educated in Bulgaria. He holds a PhD degree in Chemistry (Biotechnology) (1993) and a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering (Biochemical Engineering) (2003). Has over 30 years of professional research experience in several countries, namely Bulgaria (Institute of Chemical Engineering, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, 1993-1999), Germany (Institute of Molecular Biotechnology, 1995-96), Denmark (University of Aarhus, 1998) and since 1999 at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal. He is currently a tenured researcher at the Associated Laboratory of Green Chemistry (LAQV) at FCT NOVA. In 2002, he has been appointed as Full-time Invited Professor to teach a number of disciplines for students in the Integrated Master of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering. Since 2004 to present is a tenured LAQV researcher. S. Velizarov is in the "World´s Top 2% Scientists ranking list" of Stanford University for his career-long impact. So far, he has authored 111 peer-reviewed articles (referred in Scopus) with > 3300 total citations (H-index = 35), 5 chapters for scientific books, and an invited entry ("Ion Exchange") for the prestigious Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, 2 patents and has delivered > 100 oral communications (including >20 inivted plenary or kenote lectures) and presented > 200 posters at scientific conferences. He has also tought several invited courses abroad. Currently, teaches academic courses in Membrane Engineering (for students enrolled in the Erasmus Mundus Master in Membrane Engineering - EM3E), on "Membranes in Separation Processes" and on "Membrane Bioreactors and Membrane Contactors", as well as selected topics of the disciplines "Mass Transfer Phenomena", Separation Processes" and "Clean Technologies and Green Chemistry" for undergraduate students from the Integrated Master Program in Chemical and Biochemical Emgineering" (UNL) and "Introduction to Sustainable Chemistry" for PhD students from the Doctoral Program in Sustainable Chemistry UNL / Universidade do Porto / Universidade de Aveiro) as well as for specialists from practice. He has supervised so far 4 Postdocs, 7 PhD students and a number of MSc students, grantees, visiting researchers, etc. So far has participated in > 50 Juries of Dissertations. He has been a PI and Coordinator of > 10 research projects. Has been expert evaluator for granting bodies in Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, USA, Saudi Arabia, etc. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of the journals "Desalination and Water Treatment", "Membranes", "Frontiers in Membrane Science and Technology". "Water", "Energies" and "AppliedChem. Has been invited as Guest Editor for Special Issues of the journals: "Applied Sciences" (Basel), "Energies", "Membranes" and "Water". He is a regular reviewer of peer-reviewed international journals such as: Journal of Membrane Science, Water Research (within the top 10th percentile of reviewers for these two Journals), Separation and Purification Technology, Environmental Science and Technology, Desalination etc.Chemical Engineering Journal, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, Journal of Hazardous Materials. His more recent research interests are focused on development of clean and eco-efficient (especially ion-exchange membrane-based) processes, such as novel membrane bioreactors for drinking water treatment; purification/valorization and management of industrial wastewaters; integrated processes utilizing reverse osmosis / nanofiltration and/or ion-exchange membranes, green H2 production, etc.
