The Ph.D. of António Amorim was devoted to the study of the, at the time, very innovative domain of the theoretical models of nuclear scattering at intermediate energy (up to 1 GeV). In 1991, António Amorim, started a very fruitful collaboration with LIP (Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas) with a year-long visit to CERN to assist the research and development of the Hadronic Calorimeter (TILECAL) for the future LHC/ATLAS experiment, an effort coordinated by Professor A. Maio. The detector simulation and optimization studies carried out by Antonio Amorim led the TILECAL collaboration to entrust him with the task of presenting the consortium results in the V International Conference of Calorimetry in High Energy Physics in 1995. The hadronic calorimeter of ATLAS is a basic feature of the jet (quark) and the missing Pt measurements and therefore is central for the ongoing study of processes involving the detection of hadrons or neutrinos. He was involved in the effort of building a Trigger DAQ system for the challenging LHC environment. Together with Helmut Wolters, he developed the first database interaction system that supported the full DAQ development. In 1996 António Amorim joined efforts with the LIP-Coimbra and began developing the database systems for the HERA-B experiment at DESY/HAMBURG. By 1999 the HERA-B collaboration invited António Amorim, with full financial support from DESY, to become the official coordinator of the database systems of the entire collaboration. Together with the Portuguese group he designed and deployed a complete detector calibration and alignment software system that later supported the entire HERA-B data taking. By 2003 António Amorim fully embraced a new and fundamentally different challenge: designing, building and testing the first Portuguese instrument for an ESO (European Southern Observatory) instrument. This large project, that he coordinated gathering the large expertise of LIP-Coimbra (precision mechanics and cryogenics). The project provided a fantastic learning experience not only on the development of a diffraction limited, cryogenic, infrared camera, but also on interfacing with the ESO instrument teams and managing an engineering team at FCUL. The camera was delivered to ESO in 2006 and was a major success, being used as the camera for the observations with the multi-conjugate adaptive optics demonstrator (MAD) for the ESO future telescopes. A very important achievement was the starting of the participation on the GRAVITY( 4 telescope interferometer for ESO/VLTI) consortium. Our team has designed, developed and built the GRAVITY Infrared Acquisition Camera and the associated telescope field and pupil control software (Co-I, head of the local team, António Amorim). Antonio Amorim has also an importante role on the DAQ/Monitoring system of the CLOUD/CERN experiment that is the main element that brings together all the separate instruments participating in a CLOUD campaign defining an integrated virtual instrument, connecting all the properties for each aerosol growing event. From 2015 to mid-2021, António Amorim was the coordinator of the branch (polo) of CENTRA - Centro de Gravitação e Astrofísica - at Faculdade de Ciencias da Universidade de Lisboa. The CENTRA-ciências polo included 11 Ph.Ds researchers, 6 Ph.D. students and several other collaborators. António Amorim is the Portuguese co-PI of the METIS first light instrument project for the future ELT telescope of ESO, being fully responsibility for the design, development and deployment of the WSS sub-system. Our participation in METIS is strategic to the future of the ESO community in Portugal, being the only national participation in first light instrument for the ESO/ELT.
