Paula A. C. Gomes (http://orcid.org/0000-0002-6018-4724; https://www.fc.up.pt/pessoas/pgomes/) is an Associate Professor, with Habilitation in Chemistry, at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), Portugal. She is also a senior researcher in "Laboratório Associado para a Química Verde" (LAQV), the Portuguese Research Centre for Sustainable Chemistry that is integrated in the largest Portuguese Network of Chemistry and Technology, REQUIMTE (https://laqv.requimte.pt/). Paula graduated in Chemistry at the University of Porto in 1993, where she also obtained her M.Sc. in Chemistry, with a Dissertation on "Dipeptide Derivatives of Classical Sulfonamide Antibiotics as Potential Antimalarial Prodrugs". Paula then pursued her Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Barcelona (1997/2000), working on solid phase peptide synthesis and use of surface plasmon resonance sensors for the study of peptide antigens/antibody interactions, under Professor David Andreu's mentorship. Her PhD Thesis, titled "Surface plasmon resonance as a tool in the functional analysis of an immunodominant site in foot-and-mouth disease virus" (https://www.tesisenred.net/handle/10803/2793#page=1) was rated Excellent cum laude, and given the European Doctorate label. Paula currently leads "ORCHIDS" (https://www.fc.up.pt/orchids/), a Bioorganic Chemistry-oriented research group, where her main research goals include (i) drug rescuing, repurposing and repositioning, mainly applied to antiparasitic agents, and (ii) bioactive peptides and peptide-based constructs for biotechnological applications in Health and Life Sciences, spanning from the Biomedical to the Agrofood sector. Paula runs "POP-UP" (https://sigarra.up.pt/fcup/en/WEB_BASE.GERA_PAGINA?p_pagina=1030728), the peptides and peptide-nucleic acids synthesis facility at FCUP and the only of its kind in Portugal. She was Secretary of the European Peptide Society (https://www.eurpepsoc.com/eps-officers/) from 2016 to 2024, and is Associate Member of Division VII - Chemistry and Human Health, of the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry (https://iupac.org/who-we-are/divisions/division-details/?body_code=700); she is also the President-elect for the Division of Organic Chemistry of the Portuguese Chemistry Society (https://www.spq.pt/associates/divisions). Currently, Paula belongs to the Editorial Board of the ACS Infectious Diseases journal of the American Chemical Society. Over the years, Paula has been contributing with peer review for Acta Biomaterialia, Advanced Functional Materials, Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, Applied Polymer Science, Biomacromolecules, Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry, Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry Letters, Carbohydrate Polymers, ChemMedChem, Current Chemical Biology, Current Medicinal Chemistry, European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Frontiers in Microbiology, Frontiers in Pharmacology, International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, Journal of Materials Chemistry B, Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Journal of Molecular Structure, Journal of Organic Chemistry, Journal of Peptide Science, Molecular Pharmaceutics, Molecules, Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry, Organic Letters, PLoS ONE, RSC Advances, RSC Medicinal Chemistry, and Tetrahedron. Paula has co-authored 200 publications, with over 5400 citations and an h-index of 39, according to the SCOPUS database assessed in early March 2024. Paula participates/d in 20 research projects funded through competitive calls, being Principal Investigator/co-Principal Investigator in about half of them. Since 2002, she mentored or co-mentored over one and three dozens PhD and MSc students, respectively, and several post-doctoral research assistants.
