Pedro Gomes is a dynamic biomedical researcher with extensive experience across different scientific disciplines (Pharmacology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Endocrinology and Aging) and with a broad set of technical skills in cellular and animal models of cardiometabolic diseases. After obtaining his PhD in Human Biology at the Faculty of Medicine of University of Porto (FMUP; Portugal), he subsequently conducted postdoctoral training at the UCLA School of Medicine (USA) and the School of Health Sciences at the University of Minho (Portugal), where he was exposed to advanced technologies, acquired new skills and established a relevant contact network. His profile and initiative have allowed him to be selected for a 5-year Assistant Researcher position (Programa Ciencia 2007/8), a nation-wide governmental initiative promoting research of excellence, at the FMUP, and was later selected for a similar position at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology at the University of Coimbra. He has a proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by 3 book chapters and 50 papers in international peer-reviewed journals (cumulative impact factor = 263; ~1400 citations; h index = 22; Google Scholar). Among them, 41 (82%) are as first, last or corresponding author, and 44 (88%) are in the Q1 quartile. As an important component of dissemination of his research outputs, he has participated in numerous national and international meetings being an author/coauthor of 49 oral communications and 95 journal proceedings. He maintains collaborations with leading scientists in the fields of metabolism and sirtuin biology, such as Tiago Fleming Outeiro (Univ. Groningen, Germany), Ruben Nogueiras (Univ. Santiago Compostela, Spain), and Maria Luz Martínez-Chantar (CIC bioGUNE, Spain). He is a member of the editorial board of 3 journals and also serves as a reviewer for several scientific journals. During his career, he has participated as a team member in 12 research projects and has been responsible for MSc and PhD student training and supervision. He is an Invited Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at the FMUP and has participated as lecturer in several MSc and PhD programs and in academic examining committees of MSc and PhD thesis. He has been awarded several prizes, including the prestigious Gulbenkian Science Award. His research has consistently addressed fundamental questions of biological and clinical relevance and his current research efforts as a PhD Researcher at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra are focused on the role of mammalian sirtuin deacetylases in cardiometabolic diseases. He also provides expert consulting services to an international pharmaceutical company in the therapeutic application of small-molecule sirtuin modulators. Overall, he has achieved a high level of proficiency in terms of communication, management and leadership skills, and proven ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
