I, Mateus Mendes, am full Professor at the Polytechnic University of Coimbra (IPC). I earned BSc (2001), MSc (2004) and PhD (2011) degrees from the University of Coimbra. The thesis submitted for the PhD in Electrical and Computers Engineering, specialty of Informatics, was entitled “Intelligent Robot Navigation Using a Sparse Distributed Memory” and proposed a method for robot localization and navigation based on an associative memory. I investigated mostly solutions based on applications of artificial intelligence (AI) to different engineering problems. I was an integrated research fellow at the Institute of Systems and Robotics (ISR) of the University of Coimbra until 2023. In 2024 I became integrated researcher at the Research Centre for Asset Management and Systems Engineering (RCM2+) and external researcher at ISR. I participated in different innovative projects, where AI methods were successfully used to optimize maintenance interventions, quality control, management decisions or even product development, among other applications. I joined IPC in 2002 as teaching assistant and became adjunct professor in 2006. I served different management positions, including course director of intermediate, BSc and MSc courses and two years as vice-president of the Higher School of Technology and Management of Oliveira do Hospital (ESTGOH), where I was in the period 2002-2019. At ESTGOH I also proposed and led the laboratories of Artificial Intelligence and Project-based Learning. In the Coimbra Institute of Engineering (ISEC), among other activities, I was involved in the proposal of two post-graduate and one MSc courses. My research focused more on predictive maintenance and I was also involved in the creation of RCM2+. I am co-author of two books and more than 70 scientific papers in international journals and conferences. I have supervised three PhD students and 20 MSc students.
