Maria João Correia

Maria João Correia is an Assistant Researcher at Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (MARE), Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL). She obtained her PhD degree in Sea Sciences by Universidade de Lisboa in 2022. She has been a researcher in marine ecology since she graduated in Biology in 1995, and her professional career has been developed also as trainer and consultant in environmental and science education programs. The scientific research activity has been developed in the domains of biology and especially in ichthyology and ecology of aquatic ecosystems, but also in the fields of fisheries, fish parasitology, biodiversity conservation, environmental impact assessment and environmental monitoring. Her core research areas are: (i) fish stock structure; (2) fisheries governance; and (3) science communication. From 2000 to 2010 she worked as freelancer in environmental education and was responsible for educational programs and training in the Portuguese Association of Environmental Education and consultant in several municipalities, private companies, and NGO¿s. During this period, she finished her MSc degree in Human Ecology (2007) by the Universidade de Évora. She currently collaborates in MARE's educational program in MARE¿s Lisbon Pole, which promotes Ocean Literacy and reached over 1300 school activities and 30300 students, since its foundation in 2015.
