Prof. Vincenzo Crunelli (ORCID iD: 0000-0001-7154-9752) is recognized as a world-leader in the field of cellular, molecular and network mechanisms underlying cortico-thalamic function in sleep and ASs. His interest in astrocytes and astrocyte-neuron signalling led his group to be the first to show that astrocyte can signal to neurons in the absence of neuronal firing and to demonstrate GAT1 dysfunction in ASs by directly recording this transporter current in thalamic astrocytes. Moreover, he was one of the first to report activation of astrocytes by GABA-B receptors. Prof. Crunelli has published >160 peer-reviewed papers, including seminal discoveries reported in Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Neuroscience, and Neuron (total citations: ~13,000; h factor: 61). He is a member of the Editorial Board of a number of neuroscience journals and was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Neuroscience Methods from 1991 to 2018. Over the last 40 years, his research has been supported by many national and international grants as the only investigator (including awards from the NIH (USA), the MRC (UK), Epilepsy Research UK and 4 five-year Programme Grants from the Wellcome Trust), totalling over GBP £15M. He has also received financial support from multi-investigators grants, including a Wellcome Trust Strategic Award and 3 EU grants (for one of which he was the Co-ordinator). He has served as a member of many grant-awarding committees, including the EU, Wellcome Trust and MRC. Prof. Crunelli has supervised to successful completion 23 PhD and 8 MSc students. Moreover, he was instrumental in securing a large grant from the Wellcome Trust (GBP £2.5M) which allowed Cardiff University to set up a 4-year PhD Programme in Integrative Neuroscience, which he has run as the Director for 8 years and has enrolled >30 students. Some of the PhD students and the postdocs he has supervised over the years now hold prominent faculty positions at Stanford University, Brisbane University and Sorbonne University as well as director-level jobs in industry . Furthermore, the EU Erasmus+ programme Prof. Crunelli has supervised many undergraduate and postgraduate students and young researchers. At present, Prof. Crunelli’s research group includes 2 postdocs, 3 PhD students and 1 MSc student (female-male ratio = 2.0) and is supported by grants from the Wellcome Trust, Epilepsy Research UK, Wales Health Board for Clinical Research, Malta Science and Technology Fund and EU. The current research facilities of his lab include a 2-photon laser scanning microscope (equipped with two lasers for simultaneous imaging and uncaging) for in vitro and in vivo experiments, a dedicated fluorescence microscope for immunohistochemical analysis (equipped with Neurolucida software), 3 patch-clamp recording set-ups, a suite for simultaneous EEG recordings in 4 freely-moving animals, one set-up for single neurons electrical recordings in large neuronal assemblies using silicone probes and equipment for optogenetic stimulations and direct/reverse microdialysis.
