As a senior researcher at the National Institute for Agrarian and Veterinarian Research (INIAV), I hold a Ph.D. and aggregation in Food Science & Technology from the University of Lisbon. My career began as the head of the Chemistry Laboratory at the National Plant Breeding Station in Elvas (1988-2003), where I played a pivotal role in implementing analytical screening methodologies for quality trait selection in cereal, protein crops, and forage breeding programs. In 2003, I shifted to INIAV headquarters in Oeiras, adopting a holistic approach to enhance the quality and marketability of cereals and grain legumes. My strategy involves exploring genetic diversity, standardizing research methods, and innovating value-added products to meet evolving consumer demands. I bring extensive experience in research project management, combining safety, nutritional, and organoleptic aspects to create healthy, nutritious, and appealing cereal-based products. Since 2014, I have actively contributed to research policy support, playing a key role in the H2020-SC2 (Food Security & Bioeconomy) Programme Committee. Additionally, I have been a member of the Standing Committee on Agriculture Research (SCAR). In H2020-SC2 until 2018, my contributions included preparing and approving working programs and voting on selected project batches. In SCAR, I focus on global issues such as Food and Nutrition Security and Climate-Smart Agricultural production. Currently, I serve as an expert for Cluster 6 in Horizon Europe, contributing to Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment. I remain an active member of SCAR and hold the position of a Research & Innovation officer within the Innovation & Knowledge Exchange team of EIP-AGRI, within the European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Network. My multifaceted role reflects my dedication to advancing research, policy, and innovation in the agricultural and food sectors on both national and international scales.
