Sónia Cláudia Vitorino Cristina

With more than 15 years of research experience, Dr Sónia Vitorino Cristina has contributed to knowledge in the fields of remote sensing of ocean colour, optical properties of the seawater and water quality. With an Oceanography background, she has been involved in national and international projects in two main areas: validation of remote sensing data and European water policy, supported by recognized national and international institutions such as European Space Agency, Portuguese Water Institute, and also with funding from competitive international calls (e.g. FP7, H2020). She is a junior researcher at the Centre for Marine and Environmental Research / ARNET - Aquatic Research Network, at the University of Algarve. Academically Dr Cristina finished her International PhD degree (Cum Laude), with a relevant record of publications, in the areas of ocean colour remote sensing (5 peer-reviewed publications as first author, 10 as co-author) and was distinguished with the Extraordinary Doctoral Award in Sciences 2015-2016 by the University of Cadiz and the First Prize for the most productive PhD student by the DEVOTES project. She has presented her work in the international context (e.g.conferences, symposiums, and workshops) and has been awarded 3 scholarships since 2006, including a PhD scholarship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, an Erasmus scholarship in Norway and an Erasmus Mundus scholarship in Brazil. During this scholarship, she spent some time in the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center an independent non-profit research foundation affiliated with the University of Bergen, Norway and in the Laboratory of GIS and Remote Sensing from the University of Vale do Itajaí, Bazil. Where Dr Cristina developed work related to remote sensing and oceanography. Dr Cristina has worked in the optical properties of the coastal and oceanic waters in southwestern Europe. She has focused on the study of the assessment of remote sensing data retrieved by ocean colour sensors, on the link between the bio-optical data and remote sensing data, algorithm development, the use of remote sensing data for classification of water policies implementation and the analysis of the seasonal and interannual variability of satellite products and its interaction in and with coastal and oceanic waters. She has contributed, to an effective assessment of the remote sensing data in the way to identify which are the most appropriate and accurate remote sensing products, to be used as effective indicators for monitoring coastal and oceanic waters. Technically Dr Cristina has experience in satellite imagery extraction, interpretation, remote sensing data analysis and algorithm development. She also has laboratory experience in methods required for an effective program of validation of remote sensing imagery, namely: total suspended matter loading, and phytoplankton pigment concentrations by spectrophotometry. She is also experienced with fieldwork for validation of remote sensing imagery, operating radiometric and atmospheric equipment, over several validation campaigns, but also for regular water quality monitoring parameters. Dr Cristina has passed her knowledge to younger researchers, being involved in teaching modular seminars to undergraduate and Master students, as well as supervisor of master students.
