Sara Martins (Ordem dos Biólogos #4116) is a researcher at the Mitochondrial Biomedicine and Theranostics Laboratory (LBioMiT, CNC-UC) since 2020 and PhD candidate (2022-2026) in Biomedicine and Experimental Biology at University of Coimbra. She is currently working on her PhD project on Mitochondrial-Derived Peptides in intra- and inter-cellular communication, with a particular focus on LHON (Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy). Previously, Sara completed the MSc in Applied Biology in 2019 by University of Aveiro and BSc in Biology in 2017 by University of Coimbra. She has worked in both the diagnostics and research facets of the laboratory, working with (Mitochondrial) Human Genetics. Projects' themes included: mitochondrial citopathies and other mitochondrial dysfunction-related diseases, science communication, pharmacogenomics, fertility, COVID-19 and obesity. Her work also includes giving support to students (highschool to MSc) and science communication (design, dissemination, event organization and tech support, social media management, etc.). Sara has participated in several events and courses (>30 since 2015), with emphasis on subjects of genetics, biomedicine and science communication. Furthermore, Sara has given oral presentations and presented posters in national and international conferences. Notably, the poster she presented (being 3rd author) in the Annual Meeting of ESCI 2023 was awarded Best Poster Presentation. Her first article (first co-author) was published in the journal Mitochondrion on March 2023. Sara is part of the organizing committee of PubhD Coimbra (2022-), a project that brings science by PhD students to the general audience, and of the BEB Day 2024, a scientific congress scheduled May 2024. She is a member of scientific associations and of PATH Coimbra. She develops a personal project (since 2021) with a SciComm component: Sciramics (instagram.com/saramics_pottery or facebook.com/saramics.pottery), which combines ceramics and science.
