Having successfully completed a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in June 1994 at Universidade Nova de Lisboa Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Pedro Tavares spent ca. 3 years as a post-doc fellow in the Department of Physics of Emory University in Atlanta, USA. During this period there was the opportunity to develop skills in several spectroscopic methods, with emphasis in Mössbauer spectroscopy and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, advanced kinetic methods such as stopped-flow and rapid-freeze quench as well as other biochemical methods in a 6 month joint appointment in the College of Medicine, University of South Florida, USA. Upon returning to Portugal, he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Department of Universidade Nova de Lisboa Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia. Since them he has been responsible for teaching courses in Instrumental Methods of Analysis, General Biochemistry, Bioelectrochemistry, Spectroscopy and Biologic Effects of Radiation. Research wise, Pedro Tavares is currently a member of UCIBIO - Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit - that holds the highest classification of Exceptional/Excellent, and ranks within the top 3 in Biomolecular Sciences. UCIBIO integrates the recently approved Associated Laboratory, Institute for Health and Bioeconomy i4HB, rated Excellent. Within UCIBIO, he is co-responsible for the Molecular Biophysics Research Laboratory (that he co-founded in 2009). He raise ca. 755 k€ in several research projects as principal investigator and more than 2.5 M€ in funding of scientific projects and fellowship programs in competitive calls for which he was part of the core team/directive board/executive committee. He was responsible for 3 senior researchers, 8 Pd.D. students (3 successfully completed) and 7 M.Sc. students. He developed several international collaborations with research centres and universities such as Aarhus University (DK), EMBL (DE), University of Dundee (UK), University of St. Andrews (UK), Emory University (USA), University of Potsdam (DE) as well as with European infrastructures in his scientific area such as MOlecular-Scale Biophysics Research Infrastructure (MOSBRI). Focusing the study in metalloproteins and bionanocages, some landmark publications were achieved in international peer-reviewed journals such as articles published in The Journal of American Chemical Society (10.1021/ja974169x, 10.1021/ja003176+, 10.1021/ja211368u), in Angewandte Chemie International Edition (10.1002/anie.201809584 ) and in Coordination Chemistry Reviews (10.1016/j.ccr.2021.214187) which contributed for a h-index of 23 (WoS). Additional, Pedro Tavares contributed with several book chapters in book series such as Methods in enzymology, Advances in Inorganic Chemistry and Encyclopedia of Metalloproteins and co-edited a book on "Radiation in Bioanalysis / Spectroscopic Techniques and Theoretical Methods" as part of the Bioanalysis book series of the prestigious Springer-Nature publishing group. Regarding academic management, Pedro Tavares participated in departamental commissions and executive committees, made part for 10 consecutive years of FCT NOVA Scientific Council and its Permanent Committee, has been part of scientific committees of BSc. and MSc. study cycles and coordinates the Radiation Biology and Biophysics Doctoral Training Programme (RaBBiT). He is also currently the Coordinator of the Biochemistry and Biophysics Division and Quality Officer for the Department of Chemistry. Finally, during the last 20 years, Pedro Tavares organised and participated in many actions of science awareness and dissemination. This should be regarded as an integral part of a university professor/researcher work since there is a societal need for understanding the basic and applied science developed in higher education/research institutions.
