Mariana Nunes Barbosa Santos (Barbosa M) completed her PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (FFUP) in 2018, with the support of a competitive FCT doctoral fellowship, focusing on metabolomic tools for drug target development and evaluation of bioactivity and clinical relevance. She held a Postdoctoral Fellowship at LAQV-REQUIMTE (May 2019–May 2021), expanding her expertise beyond analytical chemistry into cellular and molecular disease mechanisms. She holds a FELASA B certification, enabling the ethical and competent use of animal models in biomedical research. In 2021, she embraced a new challenge, joining the Glycoimmunology Lab (UCIBIO-NOVA FCT) as a Postdoctoral Researcher of the ProDGNE project (EJPRD/0001/2020), and became responsible for the workpackages on the development of a preclinical platform for GNE myopathy and other sialylation-related disorders. This transnational initiative marked the beginning of her journey in Glycoscience, at the interface of Chemistry, Biology, and Immunology, focused on glycans and glycan-protein interactions in congenital disorders and cancer. In 2023, she was awarded a Postdoctoral Researcher position under the InnO-Glyco project (2022.04607.PTDC), investigating the role of the O-glycan sialyl Tn (STn) in pancreatic cancer progression and potential therapeutic strategies targeting aberrant glycosylation. In parallel, she took an active leadership role within the GLYCOTwinning EU project (GA: 101079417), where not only contributed to training, networking, and research-support activities, but also helped shape and implement key components of the GlycoToolBox platform, building its business plan and strengthening its impact on translational glycoscience across academia and industry. Within this framework, she undertook a short-term training exchange at the Cancer Glycoimmunology Lab (CICbioGUNE, Bilbao, Spain), to gain insights in advanced cellular and biophysical techniques to study Siglec-mediated signalling. Her research trajectory is supported by a growing publication record (22 publications mainly in Q1 journals), an h index of 16, and participation in national and international conferences (36 posters and 29 oral communications). She actively engages in science communication and knowledge transfer initiatives, including the iUP25k Business Ideas Competition. She also has relevant teaching experience, including invited lectures in MSc and PhD programs. She has supervised and mentored students at PhD (1 ongoing), MSc (4 concluded), and BSc (4 concluded; 1 ongoing) levels, strengthening her leadership, project planning, and communication skills. Her research thrives through collaborations with multidisciplinary teams, consolidating her career as an independent researcher. Her scientific activity experienced temporary interruptions due to personal circumstances: sick leave for a high-risk pregnancy (20 Nov–12 Dec 2023) followed by a 5-month maternity leave (13 Dec 2023–10 May 2024). Still, she remained engaged through remote supervision, project planning, and manuscript revision.
