Ana Ledo concluded her degree in Biochemistry at the University of Coimbra in 2000, followed by a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2007, also at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. In 2014 she was selected as a Ciencia Researcher and is currently an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy University of Coimbra and a researcher at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, U. Coimbra, Portugal. Her early research focused on understanding the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the modulation of neurometabolic and neurovascular coupling. Early achievements include the determination of neuronal-derived NO concentration dynamics and its impact on tissue oxygen consumption, confirming the role of NO as a regulator of neurometabolism at the tissue level. These results were published in high-impact journals including PNAS (IF. 11.2, DOI: 10.1073/pnas.0503624102), Mol Asp in Med (IF. 14.2; DOI: 10.1016/j.mam.2004.02.010), and Free Rad Biol Med (IF. 7.4; DOI: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2010.01.024). More recently she has focused on linking changes in NO bioactivity and bioavailability to derailment of neurovascular and neurometabolic in aging and neurodegeneration, published in Exp. Neurol. (DOI: 10.1016/j.expneurol.2017.01.013), Neurobiol. Aging (DOI: 10.1016/j.neurobiolaging.2016.06.012), Cell Mol. Neurobiol. (DOI: 10.1007/s10571-014-0115-0) and Front. Physiol.(DOI: 10.3389/fphys.2018.00913) and understanding the role of high-fat diets in precipitating neurological alterations (J. Alz. Dis. DOI: 10.3233/JAD-210122). Additionally, she investigated the putative role of hydrogen peroxide as a volume transmission signaling molecule in the brain, recently published in Redox Biology (IF. 11.8, DOI: 10.1016/j.redox.2022.102250). In parallel, she has designed novel tools for in vivo monitoring in awake behaving rodent models namely micro(bio)sensors for oxygen, glucose, lactate, glutamate, and novel bioanalytical tools for the study of brain bioenergetic metabolism coupled to neuronal activity in vivo Sens. Act. B (IF. 7.5, DOI: 10.1016/j.snb.2020.127899) and Biosens. Bioelectron. (IF. 10.6; 10.1016/j.bios.2021.113874). She has had 2 grants approved as PI, focused on the role of NO signaling in the pathophysiology of neurodegeneration. She is since 2018 Co-PI of the project "Monitoring neurometabolic markers in vivo using microelectrode-based biosensors". She has co-supervised 1 Ph.D. thesis and 2 MSc Thesis and is currently co-supervisor of one Ph.D. student and one MSc student. Furthermore, she has received 5 awards, the most recent of which is the "Leopold Flohé Redox Pioneer Young Investigator Award" in the 2019 SFRR-Europe Meeting, aimed at distinguishing "scientist < 45 years with outstanding novel findings in the field of biological redox processes, working already independently, and leading an own group of young scientists having published high-quality papers." She has acted as evaluator for two grants (2020 - The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies FRIAS COFUND Fellowship Programme (FCFP) and 2016 - France Alzheimer & Maladies Apparentées) and reviewer/referee for relevant journals including Redox Biol., Free Rad. Biol. Med., Neurobiol. Dis., J. Physiol. and Nitric Oxide. To date (December 5th, 2023) her h-factor is 17, counting 797 citations (Scopus).
