José Miguel Castro is an Associate Professor at the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. He graduated in Civil Engineering from the University of Porto in 1994 and concluded an MSc (with distinction) in Structural Steel Design at Imperial College London in 2000. In 2006 he was awarded a PhD in Civil Engineering from Imperial College London. Miguel is an expert in steel and composite structures subjected to extreme loading conditions such as earthquakes and he has been actively involved in the coordination of several national and European research projects. He is a full member of Technical Committee 13 on Seismic Design of the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS) and is also a member of CEN/TEC250/WG2 that is working towards the development of the new version of Eurocode 8, the European seismic code. His current research interests are on the development of novel seismic design methodologies for steel structures as well as on the collapse and seismic risk assessment of existing steel buildings. He is co-author of more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and international conference proceedings and is a reviewer of several scientific journals in the fields of earthquake engineering and steel structures. In addition to his research activity, Miguel has been involved in consultancy work for several national and international projects for both national and private institutions. He acted as an external expert on the safety assessment of steel structures of different types, including industrial buildings, antenna towers, poles of energy transmission lines, supporting systems of photovoltaic panels and steel tanks.
