Luís Gales, born in 1971, graduated in Chemical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) in 1994. In 1995, having been awarded a Ph.D. Scholarship from FCT, he pursued his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, completing it in 2000 at the University of Porto (FEUP) under the supervision of Carlos Costa and Adélio Mendes . He served as a Lecturer at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS) at the University of Porto (UP) from 2000 to 2002 and later as an Assistant Professor in the Molecular Biology Department of ICBAS from 2002 to 2007. Since 2007, he has been an Associate Professor of Biophysics at ICBAS and currently holds the position of sub-director of the Molecular Biology Department. He was elected as a member of the Council of Representatives and of the Pedagogical Council of ICBAS. Luís Gales employs biophysical techniques to explore the molecular mechanisms behind protein self-assembly, ultimately resulting in the development of amyloid. His ultimate goal is to suggest innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for neurodegenerative diseases, particularly transthyretin-related amyloidosis. He has contributed to over 100 publications (h-index of 32).
