Teresa Girão is currently the director of the Botanic Garden (Univ. of Coimbra), and a research scientist in science communication at the Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for People & the Planet (CFE, Univ. of Coimbra). She was previously the deputy director for collections at the Science Museum (2019-2021). She has previously worked as a science communication manager at the Botanic Garden (2017-2019), as part of the Portuguese Research Infrastructure of Scientific Collections (PRISC), promoting the use of scientific collections by different agents of the community, and as an exhibition developer at the Science Museum (2015-2017). She was an assistant researcher in science communication at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (Univ. Coimbra) (2009-2014), working as the Science Communication Officer, supporting scientists in the creation of meeting platforms for science and society. She was in charge of the creation of Junior Science Center at Biocant - Biotechnology Innovation Center (Cantanhede) (2007-2009), a project aiming to provide students and teachers with innovative hands-on learning experiences in the field of Biological Sciences. Her research activity was firstly focused on the field of biotechnology and neuroscience gaining extensive scientific and technical expertise. She worked as a post-doc fellow at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (Toronto, Canada) from 2005 to 2007, researching on degeneration and regeneration of CNS upon aging and disease, and she was a student at the University of Coimbra where she did her Ph.D. in Biochemical Technology (2005).
