Maria Beatriz Barreiro completed her Bachelor degree in Biochemistry in 2018 and her Master's degree in Forensic Anthropology in 2020 by the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Her Master's dissertation focused on studying fluorescence of burnt bones and the potential use of this property to distinguish between burnt skeletal remains and debris. This pioneering study was supervised by Professor Maria Teresa Ferreira and Professor Miguel Morgado from the University of Coimbra. Her motivation for this topic of research lies in the opportunity to contribute to the search and eventual identification of missing people, especially in fire-related mass disaster scenarios. Currently, she is expanding on the topic of fluorescence-based techniques applied to burnt bones under a PhD programme in Anthropology.
