With a PhD in Ecological Economics from the UK, Sandrine Simon focuses on interdisciplinary approaches of issues such as urban agriculture, integrated water management, natural heritage, environmental policy-making tools, participatory governance and social learning and circular production processes. She is a strong advocate of participatory approaches. Her recent research focused on Morocco and led to the publication of "Histoire d'Eau. Le patrimoine de l'eau jailli des sources pour un developpement alternatif au Maroc" L'Harmattan, Paris (in 2020) and "Reviving Indigenous water management practices in Morocco. Alternative pathways to sustainable development" Routledge, London (in 2021). Of French nationality, she has spent more than 25 years in the UK and the past 11 years in North Africa. She regularly carries out works in translations from English to French and from French into English. She has mainly worked in educational / research professional environments (Universities - France, UK and Morocco-, NGO research units - Forum for the Future UK -, French Institute abroad and Secondary schools). Her interest and research in governance and how to operationalise sustainability has therefore also integrated considerations on educational reforms and social learning. In line with this, her current line of research explores 'Territorial Education', 'Citizen Science' and 'Urban Agriculture' in the context of sustainable cities. She has recently published the following article and chapter on these approaches: Simon, S. (2021). Territorial Education through Urban Agriculture. Contributing to the building of sustainable cities in time of a pandemic. Current Issues in Comparative Education, Vol 23(1):31-47 and Simon, S. (2022). Towards city resilience, food security and territorial learning. Three territorial paradigmic shifts triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic. In Smaniotto Costa, C. & Aragao, N (Eds.) Understanding and transforming the territory. Edicoes Universitarias Lusofonas. She has been co-cordinating a working group on Citizen Science, whose objective is to write a White Paper on her research centre's approach to Citizen Science in urbanism and territorial education. She now carries out her research at the Universidade Lusofona de Lisboa, at the CeiED, in the area of territorial education, participatory urbanism and urban agriculture, with a particular focus on vulnerabilities that emerged from the current pandemic. These include food insecurity, the difficulty in enhancing participation when social distancing is necessary, and the weaknesses of the educational and professional training system in equipping stakeholders with the skills that are necessary to operationalise sustainability. To do so, her lines of action include research on how urban agricultural initiatives can help cities become more food autonomous; how to develop appropriate social urbanism online platforms; and how new forms of education, based on experiential and social learning, can help to make 'sustainability' more relevant to people's private lives and needs, whilst respecting the global citizenship UNESCO principles that are universally shared. Her current focus is on developing a participatory online urban governance platform for stakeholders involved in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area food system.
