Maria João Melo is Full Professor at the Department of Conservation and Restoration of the NOVA School of Science and Technology as well as a researcher at Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry-Requimte and Institute of Medieval Studies at NOVA.  After a PhD in Physical Chemistry (1995), specifically in Photochemistry, she decided to apply her expertise towards the conservation of works of art. She made a PostDoc in Florence (1996-98) at the Italian Research Council (CNR), one of the leader institutions in this field. She became an expert in infrared spectroscopy applied to cultural heritage and started research on the safeguard of historical dyes, medieval illuminations as well as on the fundamental degradation mechanisms in polymeric systems.  When she returned to Portugal in 1998, she participated in the creation of the Department of Conservation and Restoration at FCT NOVA. She was its president (2017-19) and is the coordinator of its PhD Program in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (funded by FCT-MCTES, 1.3 M€). She has participated in 15 research projects and was the PI of 6 (1 M€). She is the author of over 90 publications in scientific journals listed in Web of Science; h-index of 31 and 2682 citations. She participates, regularly, in national and international congresses, having presented more than 100 oral communications. She supervised 15 successful PhD theses. She serves in the editorial board of the scientific journals "Heritage Science" and "Dyes and Pigments", and a reviewer for several scientific journals (e.g. Accounts for Chemical Research, Scientific Reports, Journal of Chromatography A, Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology, Polymer Degradation and Stability, Journal of Raman Spectroscopy, Philosophical Transactions A, RSC Advances, Analytical Chemistry). Her present challenge is to strengthen her interdisciplinary research and approach, at the frontiers of the social and natural sciences, promoting public engagement.
