I am currently a neuroscience researcher at the Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research (CIBIT) from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, working under the AIMS-2-TRIALs consortium. In 2011, I completed my MSc in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Coimbra. My thesis focused on the neuroanatomy and neurochemistry of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). After completing my MSc, I worked under European Era-Net projects investigating the impact of sensory deprivation on brain adult plasticity (blind and deaf-blind clinical populations). In 2016, I moved to London to pursue my passion and develop my research on ASD at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN) from King’s College London in the UK, a worldwide leading centre for autism research. During my PhD I investigated the neurobiological responsivity to acute doses of a GABA-acting drug in ASD and showed, for the first time in humans, that it is possible to restore atypical GABA-dependent visual processing in ASD. I completed my PhD in Neuroscience in 2021. My research seeks to better understand the neurobiological mechanisms underlying ASD to identify clinically relevant biomarkers that may lead to tailored pharmacological therapies for ASD. In particular, I am involved in studies using multimodal neuroimaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance spectroscopy, electroencephalography, and Positron Emission Tomography, as well as drug challenges to probe the living human brain. I am passionate about neuroscience in general, with a special focus on ASD.
