Rui F.P. Pereira (RP) graduated in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Coimbra (Portugal, 2005). In 2012 he finished his PhD on Macromolecular Chemistry, in the University of Coimbra, presenting a thesis entitled "Interactions between metal ions and anionic surfactants". From 2013 to Jan 2019, he was a postdoctoral researcher in a collaboration between the Chemistry Center of the University of Minho (Portugal) and the Chemistry Center of the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (Portugal). The postdoctoral work was focused on the synthesis and characterization of hybrid organic/inorganic multifunctional materials, with special focus on the use of biopolymers. Since Feb 2019, he has been a junior researcher in the Chemistry Center of the University of Minho. He has been using his chemistry base knowledge to give contributions predominantly to the materials engineering field. Nevertheless, his research career is characterized by contributions in a remarkable multidisciplinary range of areas, like colloids and interfaces; interactions in polyelectrolyte complexes; disordered and ordered organic-inorganic hybrid materials; biomimetism; biomaterials; bio-inspired superhydrophobic coatings; waste valorization; electrolytes derived from natural materials (proteins, polysaccharides or biomass-derived carbon dots) doped with ionic liquids; applications of natural polymers in sustainable advanced batteries; sustainable "smart windows"; components for tactile sensors; sensors and fillers for concrete structures; or medical devices. Special highlight should be given to his skills to process and transform silk proteins: he proposed the first ever use of silk as a solid polymer electrolyte and battery separator, and the very first application of one of such silk-based electrolytes in electrochromic devices. RP participated in the publication of 2 book chapters, 53 papers in international peer review journals (h index = 19, with 928 citations, according to Google Scholar at 04/03/2024). Five of his papers were selected as covers pictures of high impact international peer-review journals and two of them received highlights in Advanced Science News. RP is co-inventor in three national and two international patent applications. RP has delivered more than 45 oral and 51 poster communications in national and international conferences. RP participated actively in 12 research projects (2 European, 2 transnational and 8 national; 1 as PI and 2 as institutional PI a), being directly involved in the fundraising of more than 1.4 million euros. In all the projects he was responsible for tasks that include the engineering of new materials for the energy, biomedical, coatings or sensors field. At present he is the local PI of the FCT funded project SolPoWins (PTDC/CTM-REF/4304/2020). He is an active funding search researcher, and in the last years he submitted projects as national PI to HORIZON-EIC Pathfinder Open 2021 and 2022 calls, that have been well rated, but not recommended for funding. RP has been a regular reviewer of 32 scientific journals, including "Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects", "Journal of Molecular Liquids", "Biomacromolecules", "ChemElectroChem", and "Sustainable Chemistry & Pharmacy". He is Review Editor in "Frontiers in Energy Research" and recently became Special Issue Editor of Energies. RP has been invited assistant professor at the Chemistry Department of University of Minho, teaching chemistry classes to undergraduate students of the Biochemistry course. He was involved in the supervision of 6 master theses, 5 master monographies, 9 final degree projects, 4 researcher fellows from R&D projects, and have acted as examiner of 1 PhD thesis (University of Valencia, Spain), 5 master theses and 8 degree final projects. In 2020, he was awarded with a praised for scientific merit, attributed by the Ponte de Lima City Council, in recognition for his contribution to science.
