I graduated in Biology (1990; Univ. Coimbra, Portugal), conducted my doctoral studies at the Charing Cross Hospital in London, UK, (1993-1997) and was awarded my doctorate in Molecular Genetics by the University of Lisbon in 1997. I then joined the lab of Charles ffrench-Constant, one of the foremost researchers in the field of myelinating glia, at the University of Cambridge, UK; as a post-doc (1997-2002), continued my research in glia cell biology first as a junior group leader at ETHZ, in Zurich, (2002-2008), and from 2009 as a Group leader and Principal Investigator at IBMC and i3S in Porto. Completed my “Habilitation” in Neuroscience at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, where I teach histology and embryology as an invited professor. In addition to expertise in glia biology, I have a broad background in mouse transgenics, transcriptomics and proteomics, and cell signalling. I have been PI and Co-PI on national and international projects financed by competitive funding, have experience in managing large program project grants intended for departmental support, have leadership experience acting as Neurobiology program coordinator (2015-2023), and vice-director of the i3S (2019-2023). I am a member of several boards and committees, including the editorial board of Glia (since 2019), the Executive Board of NetworkGlia (since 2024), the Scientific Committee of Fundação Bial (since 2016), the FENS History Committee (since 2022), the ISN Advanced School Committee (since 2023), and the external advisory board of the Achucarro Basque Centre for Neurosciences (since 2024), among others. I have also extensive experience in reviewing manuscripts for scientific journals, grants for national and international agencies and trusts; and in advising science and technology policies as a member and vice-president of the Health and Life Sciences Council of the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) (2013-2016).
