Sergio Chozas

I am a plant community ecologist specialising in Mediterranean environments. Following my BSc in Spain (1992¿97), I pursued a postgraduate Erasmus at the University of Lisbon (UL). From 1998 to 2005, I engaged in numerous research projects, including coordinating one of two EU LIFE projects focused on conserving natural habitats and flora. In October 2006, I took a 4-year break from science, working as the Botany and GIS coordinator at an Environmental Consulting company. In 2009, I co-founded the Portuguese Botanical Society and currently serve as its Board Secretary. Returning to academia in 2010, I completed a PhD at UL in February 2016, revealing the central role of soil and climate in the community dynamics of sandy soil shrubs. During my PhD, I had two 2-month paternity leaves and spent two secondments at the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid, enhancing my understanding of community ecology and biogeography. In my postdoctoral phase, I focused on raising awareness about biodiversity and promoting conservation. I authored 18 papers in high-impact journals, spoke at 10 international meetings, and (co)authored 28 oral communications in conferences. I contributed to the writing and development of six projects with a total budget of ¿1,900,000, managing one as a coordinator and serving as co-PI for two. Over the last five years (2019-24), I taught Ecology (bachelor¿s degree), Plant Ecology (master¿s degree), and Flora and Vegetation of Portugal (bachelor¿s degree) at UL, introducing innovative approaches to engage students in plant diversity issues. Additionally, I taught Conservation Biology at Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique for the MSc Degree in Conservation Biology. As a highly motivated teacher and supervisor, I currently supervise two PhD students, two MSc students, and mentor four international students (two Spaniards and two Angolans). I presently hold the position of Invited Assistant Professor at UL, being responsible por the Plant Diversity classes, and Invited Researcher at FCiências.ID, for the project Biosolar.
