Catarina R Almeida is Assistant Professor at the Department of Medical Sciences, University of Aveiro, Portugal. Catarina
has a PhDin Cell and Molecular Biology from Imperial College London (2007) and did a PostDoc at the Institute of Biomedical
Engineering (INEB) in Porto, Portugal. Some of Catarina's main discoveries were: 1) quantification of the number of activating/inhibitory
ligands that regulate NK cells; 2) NK cells can regulate stem cell behaviour by recruiting human Stem Cells, with NAP-2 being
involved in this recruitment; 3) the chemistry and architecture of 3D biomaterials impact on macrophages polarization. Overall,
Catarina has been studying immunomodulation of innate immune responses and inflammation. Currently, her research is focused
in: i) understanding how intracellular homeostatic mechanisms influence the responses of innate immune cells, and ii) how
can we modulate innate immunity to treat autoimmune conditions. Catarina has published 49 articles in journals (accumulated
IF > 300), 4 sections of books and one edited book (h-index 23, citations >1980, source: Scopus). She has been principal investigator/co-PI
in 6 projects and Researcher in 11 projects. Catarina is highly involved in teaching and training activities for young researchers,
having supervised 6 (4 ongoing) and co-supervised 6 PhD and supervised 15 (6 as co-supervisor) MSc dissertations. She has
organized more than 20 events, including scientific workshops and science outreach events, and has received 9 awards and/or
honours. In her professional activities Catarina interacted with 194 collaborators, as seen by the co-authorship of scientific
papers. In her curriculum Ciência Vitae the most frequent terms in the context of scientific, technological and artistic-cultural
output are: inflammation; tissue regeneration; biomaterials; innate immunity.
