Joana Fernandes (JF) completed the Agregação (Habillitation) degree in Engenharia Geográfica in 2019 by Universidade do Porto (UPorto), Faculdade de Ciências, PhD in Remote Sensing in 1993 by University of London, MSc in Remote Sensing in 1988 by University of London and First Degree in Engenharia Geográfica in 1984 by UPorto. She is Assistant Professor with Habillitation at UPorto. JF first topic of research was precise orbit determination for the first Earth Remote Sensing satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA), ERS-1, in the scope of her PhD degree, conferred in 1993. Soon after completing her PhD, she began studying in the new field of satellite altimetry, driven by a community of young researchers she met at a series of European Conferences on Satellite Altimetry. Since then, she has been developing research in topics related to satellite altimetry. Starting with the use of satellite altimetry data for applications such as the determination of the mean sea surface, marine gravity, marine geoid and surface geostrophic currents, her studies evolved to the development of data processing and improvement techniques, focused on the role of range and geophysical corrections. As part of supervised PhD theses, relevant studies have been conducted in the Azores current system and in the Indonesian region, in sea level variation and related climate variables using novel statistical approaches, on the Sea State Bias and on the Wet Tropospheric Correction for radar altimetry. Over the last 20 years, her research has focused on satellite altimetry in the following two main topics: i) Development of methodologies for improving the range and geophysical corrections required to derive accurate surface heights from satellite altimeter observations, with focus on coastal and inland water regions. ii) Satellite altimetry applications for, e.g., the determination of the marine gravity field, ocean circulation and sea level studies, both at global and regional scale. All research carried out in these topics was done as part of the UPorto satellite altimetry team, the only research team in the country working in this field. In the scope of this research, the following main achievements are highlighted: 1) Total number of 109 relevant publications: 4 Book Chapters in ISI and/or SCOPUS, 32 (21 in Q1 journals) Peer-Reviewed Papers in ISI or SCOPUS, 14 Other Publications in ISI or SCOPUS, 59 Other relevant Publications, 27 of them in Peer-Reviewed Conference Proceedings. 2) Six concluded and one ongoing PhD theses. 3) The recognition by the research community, in particular by ESA, of the unique competences of the UPorto team in satellite altimetry, namely on the wet tropospheric correction, as demonstrated by the number of ESA funded projects in this topic with UPorto partnership, by the participation in scientific advisory boards and in the scientific and organizing committees of the most relevant scientific meetings in the field. 4) The “GNSS-Derived Path Delay Plus (GPD+)” wet tropospheric corrections (WTC) developed at UPorto became the state-of-the-art algorithm for the computation of the WTC for satellite altimeter missions. The GPD+ WTC: i) have been selected for the generation of Sea Level Climate Change Initiative products, adopted in climate studies; ii) Are being included in the official L2 products of CryoSat-2 and Envisat missions. In the first case, daily GPD+ WTC are being produced and delivered to ESA in an operational mode; iii) Are being distributed through the FCUP webpage (http://www.fc.up.pt/Satellite_Altimetry/index_data.html) and by AVISO, one of the most relevant satellite altimetry data providers, for all satellite altimetry missions; iV) Have been recommended for inclusion in the S3 NTC L2 products both by the Sentinel-3 validation team (S3VT) and by the Sentinel-3 Quality Working Group (QWG) in their last meetings.
