Belo is a physicist dedicated to the study of magnetic materials and their phase transitions. He is particularly motivated by the scientific questions and the technological opportunities that emerge from macro to nanoscale design of magnetic materials. Belo was awarded a FCT-funded PhD in Physics by UPorto in 2017. He has orally presented in major international conferences: INTERMAG, MMM, JEMS, ICTF and IBCM, where he won the IUVSTA-Elsevier Student and the Best Oral presentation awards. During this time, Belo was a visiting researcher at: INA(Spain) Ames Lab (USA), Imperial College (UK), ICMM (Spain), ISOLDE-CERN (Switzerland) and at large-scale facilities, via successful beam/experiment-time applications: SNLS II (Brookhaven), ESRF (Grenoble), MAX Lab (Lund), HFML (Nijmegen), APS (Argonne), CNMS and ORNL (Oak Ridge). Belo became a Post-Doctoral researcher at UAveiro for 2 years, where he produced magnetocaloric materials with improved performance and co-developed a magnetic heat pump prototype within the Smart Green Homes project (UAveiro and Bosch). In 2019, Belo joined IFIMUP as a Junior Researcher to be dedicated to the study of materials phase transitions and their applications in magnetocaloric refrigeration and negative thermal expansion. In particular, using the latter, he is interested in the optimization of construction materials thermal expansion towards the development of more resilient infrastuctures. His expertise in Physics of Condensed matter is demonstrated by the 59 peer-reviewed publications: 48 (14 as 1st author, 10 as corresponding) in regular and prestigious journals such as Mat. Today Phys, JPhys: Energ., PRApplied, ACS Mater. Interf., Mater. Des. and NanoEnergy, 7 in conference issues, 2 patent filled and 2 book chapters (1 as 1st author) . Currently, Belo publications have 631 citations resulting in a 14 h-factor and 19 i-10 index, according to Scholar. Belo has been successfully developing his scientific independence as Principal Investigator (PI) of 6 projects (2 national, including FCT) and 4 international (including EIC Pathfinder, Fulbright and EEA Grants) in a total of + 3.9 MEuros. It is worth highlighting the recently approved EIC Pathfinder project entitled MAGCCINE comprising 7 european partners and 3.6 MEuros dedicated to the development of a vaccine refrigerator prototype, where Belo is the PI of the whole consortium. In addition, he has developed new collaborations at Brookhaven National Laboratory (USA), TUDarmstadt, HZDR (Germany) Inst. Ener. Tech. (Norway), Durham Univ. Comm. (UK) and Champalimaud foundation (PT) while strengthening previous existing collaborations. His expertise in the field has been recognized through the Early career scholar (2019, J. Materials Research) and the Emerging Leader in Applied Physics (2024, Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics) awards and through the invitation to be: Chairman (JEMS 2020, JEMS2022, INTERMAG2024), Guest Editor for a JMMM special issue (9) and for a Metals special issue (8), integrate the Editorial Review Board of IEEE Magnetics Letters and to act as reviewer for US DOE funding applications and for Fulbright Comission Grants Evaluation Committee and for (76+) in journals, such as Progress Materials Science, ACS Chem. Mater. Simultaneously, Belo has been active in University teaching (10 semesters) and supervision: as an Invited Assistant Professor at UAveiro (2018) and at FCUP (2019-now) teaching Electricity and Magnetism and Physics Labs (I, II and III) and Spintronics; and as the main supervisor of 3 PhD, 11 MSc theses and 23 BSc scientific initiation projects and co-supervisor of 1 PhD, 2 MSc and 10 BSc. In addition, he is committed to Innovative Pedagogical practices as the PI/co-PI of two Pedagogical Innovation Projects (“Verão com Ciência” and “Projecto Inovação Pedagógica UP”). In parallel, he has also been actively involved in scientific dissemination activities (EVF, FCUP, 5y; ADFisica, FCUP, AVerao, UA).

2012/09/01 - 2016/09/01 "Escola de Verão" is a Physics summer school organized by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of FCUP for top high-school students. It occurs every year in September and lasts for one week. In this summer school the students learn advanced concepts from Classical and Quantum Physics. The school curriculum includes theoretical and experimental approaches. In the latter the students are tutored by a Physics undergraduate student and they are supposed to undergo an advanced experimental training. J. Belo was monitor for 5 years in a row.
