Mónica Carvalheira is assistant researcher at UCIBIO-i4HB (NOVA FCT). She has a master degree in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia - Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2008) and she completed her PhD in Sustainable Chemistry, in the area of biological wastewater treatment in 2014 in the same institution. Between 2015 and 2018 she was a postdoctoral researcher at Biochemical Engineering Group, at UCIBIO-i4HB (NOVA FCT) and between December 2018 and 2024 she has been researcher at the same group. Her research has been focused on wastewater/waste treatment and valorisation through anaerobic digestion process or biopolymers production. She also started new research activities in biogas upgrading (in collaboration with LMP group from LAQV), production of biogas through sludge degradation, nutrient removal from wastewaters and separation of compounds from biological streams using membrane processes (in collaboration with LMP group from LAQV). She published 24 papers in international peer review journals, 2 book chapters, 10 papers in conferences proceedings and has a h-index of 14. Her scientific work was disseminated in international conferences with 19 oral and 21 poster presentations and 5 seminars/workshops. She has participated in 9 national and international projects, 1 project with the industry and 1 integrated action with the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA). Also, she was team member of a capacity building project (TESS) in the field of Higher Education 2019 (Erasmus+ programme). In the scope of one European project, she was involved in the technology transfer from academia(pilot-scale) to industry (semi-industrial scale). She is member of Environmental Biotechnology (EB) Division of the European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB), cost action PURPLEGAIN and Amonet. She has been supervising 1 PhD student (and 3 PhD student international internship), 1 postdoctoral research, 7 research assistants, 15 master students (2 ongoing), 1 graduate student (Research Internship) and 15 undergraduate students (8 of them, she supervised the laboratorial research activities) and she is engaged in collaboration with 2 PhD student (1 of them from the industry). Furthermore, she participates in several dissemination activities, such as, Noite Europeia dos Investigadores, EXPO-FCT (open day for high school students), Ciência - Encontro com a Ciência e Tecnologia em Portugal, Nova Steam Academy, Pilot scale installation exhibition, Raw Materials University Day, Programa "Cientificamente Provável", NOVA Science & Innovation Day. She was part of the team (3 researchers from NOVA FCT) that was selected as one of the five finalist teams of Blue Bio Value Ideation 2023 edition.

A rapid methodology for intracellular storage polyphosphate (poly-P) identification and monitoring in enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) systems is proposed based on quantitative image analysis (QIA).
