In 2007, after a final year project at Università di Torino, Italy within Erasmus programme, I completed my BSc in Applied Chemistry at FCT-NOVA. Then I did a Master (2008) and Ph.D. in Biotechnology (2013) with Prof Cecilia Roque (FCT-NOVA) and Prof. Chris Lowe (University of Cambridge, UK), working in the fields of Peptide & Protein Engineering and combinatorial chemistry towards new affinity pairs tag-receptors for protein purification. This work was recognized with the Younger investigator award by Hoffman-La Roche and Best Poster Prize at ESBES 2010. During this period, I also performed several research internships in top internationally recognized labs, namely at the University of Cambridge, UK, and at the Scripps Institute, La Jolla, USA. Then in 2014, I did a joined Postdoc between FCT-NOVA and Prof. Rein Ulijn at Advanced Science Research Center, CUNY, New York, where I spent 1 year, combining my previous expertise in state-of-art peptide engineering methodologies (e.g. display technologies) with supramolecular peptide systems chemistry to develop peptide scaffolds with stability and dynamics to incorporate function focused on catalysis, and also as useful tools to target biological and synthetic supramolecular structure. This work was selected for presentation at Gordon conferences Chemistry & Biology of peptides (2018) & Supramolecular Chemistry (2019) and awarded with a travel grant from the Biomaterials group of Royal Society of Chemistry (2018). From 2018-2021, I was a junior researcher at FCT-NOVA working at understanding structures typically found in biological systems (e.g., collagen triple helix), and at developing minimal artificial enzymes, bioinspired on the catalytic site of tyrosine phosphatase. In 2019, I was awarded the 2019 Research Fund from the Royal Society of Chemistry to develop peptides resembling collagen's triple-helix fur further integration of phosphatase activity. I am the Co-PI of the SEE2SEA project PTDC/BII-BIO/28878/2017, a project to explore marine-based bioinspired materials focused on intrinsic disorder proteins for gas sensing, and I am also a key collaborator at DeshPET (Prof. Daniela Kalafatovic, Rijeka University, Croatia) to use machine learning algorithms to predict catalytic function in short peptide sequences. I have authored 30 publications, in the fields of Biotechnology, BioMaterials, and Chemical sciences (7 as corresponding, 2 book chapters, h-index 12, 500+ citations, GS), 1 national patent filled, 2 invited, and 7 oral communications and 18 posters. I am actively involved in mentoring and inspiring young researchers (2 PhD, 4 Master and 16 undergraduate students),I have co-organized international training actions (ABC2 2017, PepperSchool: 2018/20, Affinity 2021), and I was invited to chair the EMBO workshop (designing biological assemblies: beyond biology 2021). I am an experienced lecturer at BSc, master level (FCT-NOVA) and PhD level (MIT-Portugal and Molecular Biosciences, ITQB). In 2022 I was invited to coordinate the Nanoprocesses curricular unit from the PhD program at ITQB-NOVA. I have been involved in institutional activities (e.g., researcher’s representative), and I am a member of the European Society of Peptides, RSC, the editorial board of Frontiers in Biotechnology & Bioengineering, and a reviewer for Scientific Reports, Frontiers, Colloids and Surfaces B. Since October 2021, I have joined ITQB-NOVA (PT), as principal investigator of the Bioinspired Peptide Systems Lab aiming to comprehend the dynamics of the peptide motifs’ interactions to understand natural compartmentalization and ultimately program complexity in peptide systems by creating functional artificial compartments with simplified behaviors.
