Daniel Carvalho holds a Master’s degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology, with a specialization in Biomedicine, from the University of Coimbra (2024). His thesis research was conducted in the Advanced Cell Technology Group at the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing (MIA-Portugal), where he investigated the regulatory role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in wound healing using combined experimental and computational approaches. He performed cell-based assays in fibroblasts and keratinocytes, analyzed RNA-seq data with Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) to identify pro-survival miRNA targets in endothelial cells, and developed a miRNA-based therapeutic strategy using an ex vivo human skin wound healing model. He co-authored the review article Advanced biomaterial strategies for overcoming age-associated wound healing impairments, published in APL Bioengineering (2025). Since June 2025, Daniel has been working as a Research Associate in Aging and Clinical Data with the University of Coimbra and the start-up HIBO, focusing on the collection, organization, and critical appraisal of clinical and scientific data on ageing, and the development of structured research databases. In parallel with his research activities, Daniel has been actively engaged in scientific outreach and event organization, contributing to initiatives such as the ETRS & SPCE-TC 2023 Joint Annual Meeting, the 2nd MIA-Portugal Ageing Spring School, European Researchers’ Nights, and the Neurocurios@s project. His scientific path also includes a research rotation at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC-UC), where he joined the Microbiomes, Metabolism, and Omics group to work on microbiome data analysis in the context of prediabetes, applying QIIME2 to interpret gut microbiome sequencing data. Earlier in his academic journey, during his Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology at the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, Daniel carried out an extracurricular internship and his Bachelor’s thesis at the Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária (INIAV), focusing on the development and application of molecular biology methods for the detection and identification of foodborne pathogens. Driven by a strong interest in the molecular underpinnings of ageing and age-associated diseases, Daniel is particularly motivated to expand his expertise in bioinformatics as a key tool to dissect the complexity of ageing and its interplay with chronic inflammation and other long-term pathologies. With a robust foundation in molecular and cellular biology, and growing experience in omics data analysis and clinical data management, he aims to contribute to interdisciplinary research focused on identifying regulatory mechanisms that can be harnessed for therapeutic innovation.
