Paula Ludovico graduated in Biology from the University of Porto in 1994 and completed her Master’s degree in Molecular Genetics at the University of Minho in 1999. She obtained her PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Minho in 2002. Since 2011, she has been an Associate Professor with Habilitation at the School of Medicine, University of Minho, and a Principal Investigator at the Health and Life Sciences Research Institute (ICVS). She has held several international visiting positions, including as a visiting scientist at the Department of Biological Sciences, Columbia University (New York, USA), the Department of Neurology at the University of Miami (Florida, USA), and the Institut de Biochimie et Génétique Cellulaires/Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Bordeaux, France. In 2013, she was a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Sciences, Department of Biology, KU Leuven (Belgium). At the University of Minho, Paula Ludovico served as Pro-Director of ICVS from 2019 to 2023 and was a member of the ICVS Board of Directors from 2014 to 2023. She was also a member of the School of Medicine Council between 2023 and 2025. She currently serves on the Disciplinary Council, the Academic Senate, and the Gender Equality Commission, and is an invited member of the Ethics Committee for Research in Life and Health Sciences at the University of Minho. Paula Ludovico is a Team Leader at ICVS and was a pioneer in the study of regulated cell death in yeast and fungi and has extensively used yeast as a eukaryotic model to address key questions in cellular and molecular biology. In particular, she has exploited the yeast chronological ageing model to investigate mechanisms controlling proteostasis during cellular ageing. Her research also addresses ageing-related diseases, particularly acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), contributing to projects on diagnosis, pathogenesis—especially the roles of autophagy and the ubiquitin–proteasome system—treatment, and disease monitoring. Her scientific output includes 109 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, more than 9,595 citations and an h-index of 34 (Web of Science, March 2026), as well as five book chapters. She has supervised numerous doctoral and master’s theses, contributing to the training of the next generation of researchers. Her research has been supported by competitive funding agencies, including the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), as well as industry collaborations with companies such as Amicus Therapeutics and Novartis. She was recently awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) grant. She is a member of the Board of the Portuguese Society of Biochemistry and the founding coordinator of the Portuguese Ageing Research Group (PAGE). Paula Ludovico also serves on the editorial boards of the journals Cancers, Microbial Cell, Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, and Journal of Food, Agriculture and Environment and represents Portugal on the International Commission on Yeasts (ICY). In addition, she has acted as an ad-hoc reviewer for more than 70 scientific journals—including Aging Cell, Cell Death and Differentiation, Autophagy, and PNAS—and for several international funding agencies such as the MSCA Doctoral Networks 2025, MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2025, FNRS/FIB Scientific Commission (INTL), AIAS-COFUND II Fellowships, the French National Cancer Institute, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (UK), the National Science Foundation (USA), the Research Foundation – Flanders (Belgium), and FCT. In recognition of her contributions to the field, she has received more than 60 invitations to speak at or chair sessions in established international scientific meetings.
