Jaume Valentines Álvarez is an Associate Professor at the Universidade Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). He is the Secretary of the Management Team of the Institut d'Història de la Ciència (UAB) and a collaborating researcher at the Centro Interuniversitário de História das Ciências e da Tecnologia (CIUHCT). Currently, he is PI of the Coordinated project UAB-Universitat de València, “Exchange Zones in the Production and Regulation of Technoscience in the Iberian Peninsula: Academics, Activists and the Industry, 1930s-1990s” (PID2023-150413NB-C21-22), involving 29 members from Spain, Belgium and Portugal and 2 four-year doctoral fellowships. Email: jaume.valentines.alvarez@uab.cat Valentines-Álvarez is a leading expert in history of modern technology, whose research career is characterized by internationalization, originality, leadership, collective work and public engagement. He holds two bachelor’s degrees, in industrial engineering (Polytechnic University of Catalonia, 2002) and history (University of Barcelona, 2005), and a master’s degree in the history of science (UAB, 2008). Between 2004 and 2008, he coordinated the heritage section of a funded research project at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and the UNESCO Chair for Technology and Culture. In 2009, he was awarded a Predoctoral Individual Fellowship (FI), and later, a Doctoral Mobility Grant for stays at Imperial College London. In 2014, he won a competitive postdoctoral fellowship from the Science and Technology Foundation in Portugal and joined the Interuniversity Centre for the History of Science and Technology in Lisbon (CIUHCT). He led a research project on technology and governance in Spain and Portugal between the 1929 and 1973 crises (€118.808,10). In 2016, he complemented his postdoctoral research with contracts as an Adjunct Professor at the Open University of Catalonia, and Assistant (Adjunct) Professor at his institution. He designed syllabus and taught courses at five universities, including an Erasmus Mundus Master (Panthéon-Sorbonne University). He has supervised undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral dissertations in Barcelona and Lisbon, and has organized seminars for the training of doctoral students. In December 2018, he was contracted as a Research Fellow at the Department of Applied Social Sciences, FCT-NOVA University of Lisbon. He was a visiting scholar at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (2007), Imperial College London (2011), University of Granada (2011), Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (2017), ERC Consolidator Group “The Rise of Citizen Science” at University of Geneva (2018 and 2019) and History of Science Institute at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (2021). He has conducted a rigorous research program, with a strong track record of high-quality publications in top-indexed journals in the history of technology and contemporary history such as Technology and Culture and Ayer and renowned publishers such as Brill and Routledge (exclusively since 2019: 2 co-authored books, 1 special issue edited, 10 articles, 6 chapters, 5 reviews; complete research track, in CV). He has been involved in 29 research projects (3 research projects, as PI and co-PI) financed by European, Spanish and Portuguese institutions; he has participated in eighty scientific meetings, organizing international conferences and a forum hosted by the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union. Closely related to his research program, he has developed a rich outreach agenda. This includes a permanentexhibition at the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia, two temporary exhibitions at theNOVA University Library, educational resources for the UNESCO Chair of Technology and Culture, digital toolsaddressed to youngsters, talks in community centers, artist catalogues, and the Colloquia “Science,technology and medicine in the public square” at the Catalan HST Society since 2012.
