I graduated in Biology in the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. This was followed by a Master Degree in Oncobiology in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto and a PhD degree in the same Faculty in 2000. Both Master and PhD studies were performed in collaboration between the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (Ipatimup) and the University of Copenhagen, in the group of Professor Henrik Clausen, a world leader in the gycobiology field. From 2001 until 2004, I was a Post-Doc at Ipatimup, studying the transcriptional mechanisms involved in intestinal metaplasia, a preneoplastic lesion of the stomach. Since the Masters until the end of the Post-doc I has fellowships from the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology. Since 2004 I hold a tenure position as Researcher, first as Assistant researcher (until 2020) and later on as Principal researcher. In 2013, I established my own group “Differentiation and cancer” focusing on transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms involved in gastrointestinal cancer progression and therapy resistance. Since the post-doc I have been involved in multiple teaching activities within the University of Porto, in Master and PhD courses, in the field of Oncobiology. Since 2013, I am Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology in the Faculty of Sciences of University of Porto, where I am also involved in undergraduate courses, as lecturer, mainly in the field of molecular and cellular biology. In 2015, I moved with my research group to the Institute of Research in Health and Innovation (i3S), the largest biomedical research institute in Portugal that resulted from the fusion of three institutes of the University of Porto, one of them being Ipatimup. I was member of the Scientific Council of Ipatimup (until 2015) and since 2015 I am member of the Scientific Council of I3S. I have been elected as vice-coordinator of the Cancer Integrative program at i3S (2023-2026 mandate). From 2012 until 2016 I was President of the first fiscal council of The Portuguese Association for Cancer Research (ASPIC). Currently, I am ASPIC Ambassador. I participate in two COST Actions, EPITRAN (2017-2021) where I was member of the management committee and currently TRANSLACORE (2022-2026). I have coordinated 9 scientific projects (3 financed by FCT) and participated in 28. I have a long-standing experience in researcher supervision (2 Junior researchers and 6 postdocs) and in student supervision (11 PhD and 20 master students). I have published 78 papers and have an H Index = 33.
