BIOGRAPHY: Luisa Helguero Graduated in Biological Sciences from the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences at Universidad de Buenos Aires and later on obtained a Ph.D. degree from the same institution. She then moved to Karolinska Institutet and worked at Jan-Ake Gustafsson´s group for 6 years. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Medical Sciences at Universidade de Aveiro and leads the Hormones & Cancer Lab at the Aveiro Institute of Biomedicine. Throughout her scientific career, she has published over 68 research articles and reviews in peer-review journals, with 2201 citations and an h-index of 28. She has coordinated 6 projects as principal investigator and has participated in many others as a team member. She has supervised 5 Ph.D. theses and 17 MSc theses to completion and currently coordinates a team of 6 Ph.D. students (supervisions and co-supervisions). The most frequent terms in the context of her scientific and technological outputs are cancer; nuclear receptors, transcriptional regulation, anti-cancer therapy resistance, obesity, metabolism, and adaptive stress responses. PERSONAL STATEMENT: I have experience in mammary gland biology, cancer, and nuclear receptors; having had Dr. Claudia Lanari, Prof. Alfredo Molinolo and Prof. Jan-Ake Gustafsson as my mentors. Since 2010 I am based at the University of Aveiro in Portugal. Since 2015, I lead a team at the Aveiro Institute of Biomedicine. We currently have six members including a medical oncologist. We apply large-scale molecular technologies, (proteomics and metabolomics), studies on animal and human tissues, and mechanistic molecular research to reveal cellular pathways underlying mammary epithelial cell differentiation, and breast cancer endocrine resistance. For many years we have also been collaborating with organic chemists, by testing the anti-tumoral effect of novel compounds, adding value to their discoveries.
