Dr. Colin Adrain is a tenured Senior Lecturer and Principal Investigator at the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research, in Queen's University Belfast, Ireland and is head of the Membrane Traffic Lab at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência. Adrain is an Editorial Board Member of the FEBS Journal and is also Commissioning Editor at the FEBS Journal. He has published 39 articles in journals and has published two book chapters. Adrain has been a co-organizer of two EMBO workshops on Proteostasis (2017 and 2019) in Portugal. As Principal investigator he participates in/has participated in 6 projects. Before becoming an independent PI, Adrain was a Postdoctoral fellow in the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (MRC-LMB) in Cambridge, UK, under the mentorship of Prof. Matthew Freeman. Adrain completed a PhD (Molecular Cell Biology) in 2003 in the Smurfit Institute of Genetics, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, under the mentorship of Prof. Seamus Martin. He obtained a BSc (1st Class Hons) in Genetics in 1997 from the School of Biological Sciences Queen Mary College, University of London, U.K. Research in the Adrain lab focuses on proteostasis (protein homeostasis) at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and its impact on membrane protein trafficking, metabolism and cell signaling. His lab combines mouse genetics/physiology with molecular cell biology and biochemistry. Current projects undergoing in the lab include: -Physiological role of the EMC (ER Membrane Complex) in membrane protein biogenesis and organismal physiology. -Regulation of metabolism by membrane trafficking and protein quality control in the secretory pathway. -Regulation of the trafficking and activation of the metalloprotease ADAM17 by its trafficking regulators iRhom/iTAP, in response to inflammatory and growth-promoting stimuli.
