The field of polymer electrolytes has been the domain of most recent activity. The techniques which, have been applied in the characterization of the materials prepared in our laboratories include thermal analysis by DSC and TGA, total ionic conductivities by complex plane analysis, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and others methods (AFM, POM, XRD and SEM). The materials studied have include commercial poly(ethylene oxide) hosts, hybrid networks prepared by the “sol-gel” method and high polymers provided by industrial collaborators. Recent attention has been focused on the use of natural polymers (like cellulose derivatives, chitosan, DNA, starch or natural rubber) because of their biodegrability, low production cost, good physical and chemical properties and can be used to prepare solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). Recently selected examples of SPEs have been subjected to screening studies as potential multifunctional (electrolyte/adhesive/sealant) components of solid-state devices (intelligent windows and batteries).
