João Balsa is a research assistant at the Azores Deep-Sea Research Group (Okeanos – Institute of Marine Sciences). His work focus on deep-sea ecology of megabenthic fauna using underwater imaging technology. He has accumulated over 300 hours of manual annotation of deep-sea imagery and developed extensive taxonomic expertise in megabenthic fauna from the Azores covering more than 400 morphospecies. Contributed to the management and curation of large ecological datasets supporting regional biodiversity assessments and conservation initiatives, and has actively participated in 12 deep-sea survey campaigns, accumulating over 100 days working at sea. Has served as Chief scientist on 4 offshore research missions, with responsibility for scientific coordination, field operations, and data acquisition. Since 2024, has also contributed to the technical development, maintenance, and incremental improvement of the cost-effective imaging tool Azor drift-cam, including the integration of positioning (USBL) and external power supply systems. He is a co-author of peer-reviewed publications addressing both deep-sea ecology and marine technology, including a perspective on democratizing deep-sea research for biodiversity conservation (Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 2025) and a multidisciplinary study of an Arctic natural oil seep spanning observations from space to the seafloor (Science of the Total Environment, 2024). In addition to journal articles, he has contributed to scientific and technical reports, datasets, and ongoing manuscripts. His research has been presented at international conferences through oral and poster contributions, including the ICES Annual Science Conference or the International Meiofauna Conference. In the last years has also been invited to deliver lectures and practical demonstrations to students at the University of Évora, Algarve, and the Azores. His broader training includes advanced courses and summer schools in marine robotics, underwater image analysis, habitat mapping, and biodiversity data standardization, as well as participation in outreach and science communication activities aimed at increasing public awareness of deep-sea research. His current interests lie at the intersection of deep-sea ecology, underwater imaging, and the development of automated and computer vision-assisted workflows to support scalable biodiversity monitoring and conservation.
