Ana Teresa Casimiro Nunes graduated from the University of Coimbra in 2011, with an Integrated Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering. Closely after, she initiated her research at ICNAS (Institute of Nuclear Sciences Applied to Health), focused on the field of medical radiation, specifically internal radiation dosimetry of PET (Positron Emission Tomography) examinations. During this time, Ana initiated her PhD studies in Biomedical Engineering, and centred her PhD research in the aforementioned topic (internal radiation dosimetry). She concluded the curricular part of the program, and her research work culminated on the production of 8 scientific contributions/communications, which were promoted in international conferences. Notably, in the scope of her PET dosimetry research, Ana received specialized research training in an international training school, held in Athens, Greece, in May 2014. Between 2016 and 2017, Ana interrupted her academic pursuits for an opportunity to join Simatix, a start-up company in Lisbon, which aimed to develop novel medical image analysis solutions to support the veterinarian clinical practice. During this time, she was involved in applied research covering different medical image analysis methods, and also acted as consultant and a professional trainer - Ana has a Professional Training Certification ("CCP") by the IEFP, since 2015 - in the fields of radiation protection, medical image analysis and clinical database structuring, in several different veterinarian hospitals and clinics. During her time in Lisbon, she was an invited teacher in the Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy course program, at ERISA (Escola Superior de Saúde Ribeiro Sanches). In june 2017, Ana returned to Coimbra for a research position at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra. In 2018, Ana resumed her PhD studies. She presented and defended her proposal for a new doctoral project, focused on the development of image-based retinal biomarkers for neurodegenerative disorders, in the summer of 2019. This thesis project was approved with a classification of 19 (scale 0-20). Since mid-2017, Ana has supervised multiple Biomedical Engineering undergraduate students in curricular internships. Currently, she is co-supervising a master student in their Biomedical Engineering thesis project. In 2019, Ana was elected Chair of the IEEE University of Coimbra's Student Branch, in the scope of which she organized a conference, followed by a debate, on the role of women in science and technology careers. Ana's academic research is centred in the knowledge fields of Engineering and Technology Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Clinical Medicine, and Basic Medicine; with an emphasis on Medical Engineering, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Medical Images, and Neurosciences. Over the course of her academic research career, she has interacted and collaborated with 24 researchers in the authorship of several scientific contributions. Overall, Ana is the lead author of 1 research article in an indexed journal and 5 conference papers, and has promoted her scientific contributions in multiple international conferences (7 posters and 4 oral communications). In addition, she currently has 3 scientific contributions in different states of revision/publication: 1 journal article and 1 conference paper, both recently accepted for publication; and 1 submitted journal article manuscript, which is currently awaiting review. Ana is also the co-author of 2 journal articles, 1 book chapter, 1 conference paper, and 1 conference poster. Currently, she holds a research fellowship in BIGDATAIMAGE, a research project funded by the European Commission, aimed at the discovery of novel biomarkers using big data methodologies.
