I am a senior researcher in genomics and bioinformatics, with 14 years of experience. I have published ~20 papers in international peer review journals, six as first author, and three as corresponding author and one as senior author (>1000 citations). My interest in science is focused in investigating the relations between biosequences (DNA and RNA) and of their functional properties, regulation as well as phenotypic involvement. I am currently an assistant professor in animal breeding and genetics at the University of Évora and I develop my research at the Faculty of Veterinarian Medicine at the University of Lisbon at the Laboratory for Animal Production and Health in the Tropics, in which I am responsible for the research topic "Molecular mechanisms associated with host/pathogen adaptation". I have mentoring experience at the level of MSc and PhD in the field of Genomics and Bioinformatics, being currently involved in co-mentoring two students in the field of OneHealth. I have extensive international experience that includes a solid network and European level with connections to US, Canada and Australia. My research is focused in the discovery or rare variants related with adaptation to extreme environments (fertility and resilience to disease and other types of stress) using local breeds This research is being conducted in the framework of H2020 consortiums as well as in national projects. Currently my team includes 4 PhD students and one postdoc. Currently I am a team member of IGEroNIMO (H2020 - 101000236) being deputy-leader of WP3. Leading T3.3 studying epigenetic variation of swine and chicken according to landscape and investigating the role of epigenetic in the control of gene expression related with fertility traits in swine. I am one of the mentors of the OnePlanet fellowship program of Agropolis Foundation that aims to foster connections aiming to promote capacity building of African scientists for adaptation for climate change. I represent U. Évora in the Management Committee and of the leader core group of CA22112 (EU-LI-PHE), co-leading the WP related with genome-phenome integration. Finally I am the PI of ResisTrypSheep (2022.10733.PTDC), investigating the genetic basis of resilience to trypanosomiasis in sheep.
