Sara Isabel Guerra Carvalhal Bandarra has been serving as a junior group leader at Algarve Biomedical Center - Research Institute (ABC-RI) in the "Chromosome Segregation in Disease Lab" since March 2022. She finished her PhD degree in Feb 2016 at the University of Dundee (UK) in Life Sciences. From 2016 to 2020, Sara did her postdoc funded by an ERC Starting Grant and FCT at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (PT) under Dr Raquel Oliveira's supervision. She joined the University of Algarve in September 2020. Works in the area(s) of Natural sciences with emphasis on Biological Sciences and Medical and Health Sciences with emphasis on Basic Medicine with emphasis on Human Genetics/Diseases. In their professional activities interacted with 55 collaborator(s) co-authorship of scientific papers, and worked in four different countries, grasping different science environments and multicultural perspectives. Sara Bandarra publishes under the name of Sara Carvalhal and she is the first author of 6 original research articles in Q1 of her field, Cell and Molecular Biology, one as the corresponding author and one published in a special collection of outstanding articles about cell biology of chromosome organisation and segregation. Her later article, Carvalhal et al. 2022 was highly shared across mass media. She has published 4 Conference Abstracts and 14 Posters, being 11 as the first author. She has been selected to give talks at 6 International Scientific meetings (including the highly prestigious international conference cell-cycle conferences in Roscoff) and invited to give 7 invited seminars. Sara also organised several meetings/events (a total of 13 including the 2023 regional FENS at Algarve) and has enrolled in leadership positions by representing her community at the PhD and undergrad studies (PhD representative, PhD committee, and Undergrad student committee) and currently on the institutional seminars and tours open to lay audience. She has contributed to the development of science education by supervising 7 undergrad students, and 4 Master's students (one as co-; 1 ongoing) since 2020. She was also the main arguer of 4 Master's theses, 3 undergraduate theses, as well as a lab demonstrator at 2 modules of Biological Sciences students at the University of Dundee, 2020 virtual Summer school at Gulbenkian Science Institute for over 90 students and invited speaker for lectures and to teach at curricular units at the University of Algarve. Sara thinks that science and communication with the community are crucial, therefore she was involved in 14 outreach and science communication activities. Furthermore, she has been involved in peer-reviewing several articles in journals in the field, first with her supervisors during her PhD and postdoc and now by herself. Has received 12 awards and/or honours - Sara was awarded the prestigious EMBO Short Term Fellowship, a BBSRC PhD Studentship, and an FCT PhD Fellowship. In addition, Sara has been recognized for her successful accomplishments during her PhD with the best poster and best image at the University of Dundee out of 200+ participants. As a PI, she was also awarded an FCT CEEC Ind to secure her salary as an independent researcher until 2026. In addition, she received the prestigious Maratona da Saúde 2022 award (a single award for the Junior category) and an Exp FCT project(2023). She was one of the recipients of the 2022 L'Oréal Portugal Honor Medals for Women in Science and received an exploratory project (competitive call) awarded in 2021 by AD-ABC. In addition, she is CO-PI of the winning project of the João Larguito Award by ABC. Participates as Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) in 1 project, Team member in 1 project, as PhD Student Fellow in 2 projects, Post-doc Fellow in 2 projects, and Principal investigator in 5 projects. CAREER BREAKS/Maternity leave (2): Jun-Nov2018 (reduced working hours until Jun2019) and Jun2023-Jan2024 (currently reduced working hours).
