Carolina Travassos completed the MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Coimbra (UC) in 2016. Her MSc dissertation was carried out at the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP) under the OrthoCT project and focused on the manipulation of phantoms and radiation detectors, planning experiments in linear accelerators, and data processing/analysis. The main outputs from her work were presented at the 2016 IEEE NSS/MIC Conference (poster, 1st author), for which she was awarded a travel grant. She was also a co-author of 4 other outputs from this project. During the last year of her master's, she also collaborated on a project started at the curricular unit of Databases and Data Analysis regarding density clustering in eye fundus images from diabetic retinopathy patients. This project was presented at 2 international conferences (posters) and in a book chapter (1st author). In 2017, she joined the Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research (CIBIT), a research unit hosted at Institute for Nuclear Sciences Applied to Health (ICNAS), UC, as a research fellow. She enrolled in a project aiming to understand the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in empathy for pain. She worked with neurofeedback based on real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rt-fMRI) and acquired experience in designing/programming fMRI studies/tasks, and acquiring and analyzing fMRI data. The results of this work were presented at the 2019 rtFIN Conference (poster, 1st author) and at the 15th MEDICON Conference (oral communication). She also published a journal article (1st author) in Frontiers in Neurology (2022: Q1). The empathy for pain paradigm developed in this work is currently been used in a clinical research project from Coimbra university medical center (CHUC) involving neurostimulation of stroke patients. Currently, she attends the PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the Universidade de Coimbra with the support of CIBIT and Siemens Healthineers Portugal. In the first year, she performed the courses from the doctoral program and defended the thesis project (19 values). After that, she has been working on planning and developing an electrical stimulation device for somatosensory stimulation in the magnetic resonance environment allowing for personalized stimulation designs and somatosensory detailed mapping. In line with that, she published a systematic review (1st author) at Frontiers in Neuroscience (2022: Q1). She has also done an internship at the University Medical Center of Utrecht to learn about somatosensory mapping using ultra-high field fMRI (7T). This was the result of a grant awarded by the Euro-BioImaging Pilot User Access Fund - a highly competitive fund that selected 10 projects out of more than 80 applications received. Highlights: - Participation as Research Fellow in 2 projects (EXPL/PSI-GER/0948/2021 and SAICT 000016 BIGDATIMAGE); - Publication of 5 articles in journals (1st author in 2), 1 section of a book (first author), 1 conference abstract (1st author), 1 conference paper (1st author), and 7 posters (1st author in 5); - International experience at UMC Utrecht; - Organization of 9 events: PubhD initiative, 2 science clubs in public schools, 2 scientific exhibitions, 2 symposiums, 1 summer school, and 1 workshop (2021); - Participation in 23 events, including courses, workshops, and science communication initiatives; - Receive 5 awards (including 3 student merit honors, 1 travel grant for participation in an international conference, and 1 grant for international internship); -Co-founder of 2 student associations at UC (IEEE student branch and Women in Engineering); -Mentoring 4 students (summer internships). The main keywords of her curriculum are biomedical engineering, health sciences, neuroscience, magnetic resonance imaging, neurofeedback, medical physics, and image processing.
