I am progress-driven Scientific Researcher with an extensive background in Sustainability and Environmental Justice. During my career I had the opportunity to give contributions for the Circular Economy and dissemination of important issues related with environmental protection that is entangled with the improvement of worldwide society life. After graduation in Applied Chemistry, I joined the Enersis as a technical researcher to develop the production of biopolymers using the byproduct of biodiesel and other industrial wastes. The technological value of the biopolymer developed was confirmed by a World Patent. The results were reported in scientific papers and included in my master's thesis in Biotechnology. Simultaneously, I supported an international cooperation with the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil which aimed the bioproduction, extraction and characterization of biopolyesters (polyhydroxyalkanoates). I was awarded with a PhD grant from the FCT with the aim to evaluate the microbial production of biopolymers from cheese whey at FCT-NOVA and CIB (Spain). With those work projects I had the opportunity of developing the bioconversion of industrial wastes into Polyhydroxyalkanoates and Exopolysaccharides by modeling and optimizing bioreactor processes, as well as to make and to evaluate its downstream process. Posteriorly, at IPMA in collaboration with FCT-NOVA, I empowered my skills in Ecotoxicology and Analytical Chemistry analyzing the Persistent Organic Pollutants on MicroPlastics, Water and Sediments, where the impact on marine organism where studied. Later, at ITQB I was invited to pursue a complex and interesting aspects of antimicrobial biopolymers, in particular, functional biomaterials composed by polyester that mimic the barrier properties of lipid polymers in plants. I had the chance to contribute for the optimization of a catalytic process used to purify plant lipid polymers (cutin and suberin) obtained from industrial plant wastes. During this period, I also developed and implemented analytical methods for the chemical deconvolution of these polymers, where its bio functionality, physic-chemical properties were also studied in order to develop knowledge in this field and to enhance its applicability in devices to release to the market. The constant involvement in European Consortiums (Academia and Companies), the organization of International Symposium and other collaborative events gave me the chance to be engaged with experts with different backgrounds and points of view. Their Science and Entrepreneurial mindset have boosted my knowledge and enlarged my landscape regarding natural polymers, that are emerging and traying to be commercially available. My pedagogic and reviewer activities have fostered my competences to mentor students/collaborators and to help them in building their technical/soft skills and knowledge and to support and guide their professional development. The business environment has encouraged other specific capabilities that complement and add value to the research activity, emphasizing a quick read and critique the technical feasibility of a process. The work developed during my Master, PhD and Postdoc research has resulted in several publications in international peer reviewed journals, a world patent and different dissemination actions. Recently, at MARE, I embraced the RIVERSEA project that lies at the interface among several disciplines and is aimed at developing knowledge about land-based sources of marine litter and microplastics, a problem of global concern with still many unknowns regarding the nature and extensions of its impacts. My ambition is to contribute to the development of new environmentally friendly solutions to improve the safety of our global Blue Society, creating and transferring value with the knowledge and products/process developed through entrepreneurship, partnerships, cooperation, and services.
