Nuno Monteiro Azevedo holds a PhD from Heriot-Watt University. Currently he is a researcher in the concrete dams department of the Portuguese National Laboratory for Civil Engineering. He has more than 25 years of experience in the development and application of numerical models in geomechanics and in the development and application of numerical models for the safety control of concrete and masonry dams. His main areas of interest and activity are the development, validation and application of: i) Continuum and discontinuum models to represent damage at macro and at the aggregate scale for geomechanics materials; ii) Novel techniques for applying explicit particle models to fracture problems in quasi-brittle material (concrete, rock, old masonry and asphalt pavement) both at laboratorial and in large scale; iii) Finite/discrete element numerical models to the static and dynamic analysis of concrete and masonry dam, including nonlinear behaviour and fluid-structure interaction; iv) Discontinuum hydromechanical coupled models for concrete and masonry dams coupled dam/foundation safety assessment. He is the author and co-author of more than 140 publications among journal articles (32), conference papers (70) and other technical and scientific reports on: i) numerical modelling (concrete, rock, asphalt pavement, concrete dams) and ii) safety and control studies of concrete dams under seismic action, during initial filling and during operating phase. His research work has been acknowledged by the Portuguese Group for Structural Engineering and by the Revista Geotecnia.
